3rd post- author.log permissions required?
|
|
|
| I have sent serveral posts asking about the events I get in the event log like
this:
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
http://www.mydomain.com - Error #2005d Message: The server extensions were
unable to access the file "author.log". Please check the file permissions.
I have not received a reply yet. Am I on a blacklist somewhere? Doesn't anybody
like me anymore?
The machine is a win2k server with 2002 extensions. What permissions are needed
on the file/directory?
Help

| No, mmac, you're not on a blacklist.
It's just that nobody has answered your post, yet.

It must be an odd question. I have asked it before and gotten no reply.

| See if this helps: Make sure IUSR has write permissions to _vti_log,
_vti_pvt and _vti_txt. If you are not getting entries in the author.log, it
could be because you are not allowing the IUSR access

It is not that it is an odd question, but you haven't indicated that
there is any problem. I, for one, spend zero time looking through the
Events log of my server, except when something isn't working properly.
Even then, that isn't the first place I look for help. More than likely,
that error resulted in a retry and you got the process that you wanted.
It that is the case, there is no problem, and nobody wants to waste time
tracking down arcane messages from Microsoft.

| Unlike yourself, I do spend time examining my log files. I am
responsible for 5 servers on two domains and two forests. While I agree the
many, no, most, are not worth the time to investigate, sometimes you don't
know there is a problem until it's too late. The very nature of the way MS
writes it's entries makes it necessary to investigate before you can call it
benign for example, if I wanted to see the FP authoring file to find out
who messed up the site last, and I didn't have any entries, then I would
wish I looked at the event log sooner.
Which is why I asked the question and I was surprised no one even responded
to say don't wory about those entries.
But thanks for the help anyway.

| You were correct, IUSR had only "list folder contents"
I added "write" and that didn't work.
Added "read" and instantly had 138k of data fill the file. I don't know
where it came from but it sure dumped it's load when the perms got changed.
Thank a bunch, for the assist.
