Author Opening web gets "Cannot create disk-based web..." error

I am using VI 6.0 SP 5 on a Windows XP Pro machine. We have been having a
persistant problem with banners disappearing on some of our site's pages, so
yesterday I decided to try uninstalling and reinstalling the Front Page
Server Extensions on my development machine. (I believe that the reinstall
may have been a different version of the FPSE since before I did this I had
an option to "Upgrade" the FPSE on the right click | All Tasks menu in IIS
admin.) Since I reinstalled the FPSE, whenever I open my project in VI I
get the following error message:

"Cannot create a disk-based Web application in
'D:\Webs\MyProject\MyProject_Local'. The directory
'D:\Webs\MyProject\MyProject_Local' is the root content directory for a
server based web. You must open it using the http:// url for the web
server."

I do indeed have 'D:\Webs\MyProject\MyProject_Local' set as the root
directory for IIS on my development machine so that I can check and debug my
changes locally without applying them to the Development server, but this
has worked properly for a long time.

Can anyone tell me how to get back to what worked?

TIA
