Author Error Trying to Use Front Page Server Extensions

I am having problems with my Front Page Server Extensions on one of my
Windows 2000 Servers.
When I try to check my server extensions, I get an error message as follows:
'The server administrations program and the server extensions on the web
server are not compatible.
The administration program is too old to use with this server.'
I went in to Add/Remove Programs and uninstalled the Front Page Server
Extensions and reinstalled - same error message.
I downloaded the Front Page 2002 Server Extensions and ran the program.
It came up with the same error message during installation.
Has anybody else had this problem?
I have a second server running IIS and I get no error messages.
I am confused as to how the program works on one server and not the other.
I found the following on the Microsoft site.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319476
I have tried both of the solutions that have been presented in the article.
Neither solution worked. I still get the same error message.
Is it because the files worked on from the workstation are using Front Page
2003?
But the web server is Windows 2000 Server?
Will these not work until the server is upgraded to Windows Server 2003?

Hi David,

Not sure about this, but check if the _vti_inf.html file has a text that
says - FPVersion="6.0.something.something".

If so, then I think this error might occur.

Vijay

I checked the test in the file below, but it does not say version 6.0.
I stopped the IIS services and copied over the file below from the server
which is working correctly.
It still comes up with the same error message.

Hi David,

This could happen if you have created the site in FrontPage 2003 and then
copied the site and pasted it to the wwwroot folder OR
if you have shared the wwwroot folder and opened a disk based web in
FrontPage 2003 on this share and then worked on it.

If you confirm this by dragging and dropping the file servce.cnf from the
wwwroot\_vti_pvt folder into Notepad and searching for the line beginning
with vti_extenderversion, this must be 5.x.x.x and not 6.x.x.x.

Vijay

Thanks Vijay for the info.
This is exactly what has happened.
I have shared out the folder for a team of three people to have access to
working on the site.
We are all using Front Page 2003.
I assume it is better to store the files for the Intranet separately and
work on a separate folder on the network file server and then copy the files
to the web server.
However, how do I fix the problem now?
Can I just copy over this _vti_pvt folder from the other server and this
will fix the problem?
Or can I just copy over this one file to overwrite the one there?
Thanks.

Hi David,

All you need to do is to open the site on the Intranet folder and publish
using the File->Publish site menu to http://mywebserver.

Preferably just take a backup of the web site first, remove the contents in
the web site folder and then configure server extension and then publish,
that way there is no mix-match of files.

Ensure henceforth the wwwroot folder is not shared and no1 opens it as a
disk based web.

Regards,
Vijay
