| Excuse the length of this question, but I need to explain some
backgroung to this problem. I am the sole IT tech for a state agency
which has limited support for special function software in field
offices. When the center was initially established 5 years ago we
used exclusively Win 95 Compaq PC's. to increase productiveity I was
given permission to establish a FrontPage - SharePoint Team Web Site
as a test for collecting information from each staff memebr in the
center, using WEb Forms connected to a Database.
To acheive this I upgraded a Compaq EP 350 Win 95 Pc to NT 4.0. Then
upgraded that to a Windows 2000 PC. Then added FrontPage 2000 and
Sharepoint. Setting it up as a local web server was done and the
forms worked like a charm, and still do. I even upgraded to iis 5.0
later.
Since then the Center has upgraded to Dell GX Win 2000 PC's, except
for a handful of old Compaq's. Including the Conpaq Web Server.
Last month I was informed that we must, Must turn in all old Compaq by
mid month April. Okay I'll just copy the software over to a New Dell
Gx 270, with Windows 2000. No?
At first we wanted to create an image of the compaq PC using Ghost 7.0
and then reimage the Dell, No Can Do. hardware problems.. we were
told.
Second I purchase PC Relocator Ultimate. Connect the old Compaq to
the New Dell and transferred all the files that PC Relocator could
find. It caused some interesting duplications , shortcuts etc. But in
the end the transfer of some network files did not take place.
I attempted to load the IIS part as recommened by Microsoft from the
Add programs system, but it ask for your Option 4 pack CD, and if I
try to use the following it will not find the appropriate install:
The original Windows NT 4.0 CD
Windows 2000 Professional Upgrade CD
FrontPage 2000 CD
FrontPage 2002 Upgrade CD
FrontPage 2003 Upgrade CD
I need help to get this Dell Win 2000 PC set-up as a local Web Server
with SharePoint capability. How do I successfully migrate our
SharePoint Web Site. Appreciate any help. PT

| My angle would be to install everything fresh on the new computer - OS, FP, etc.., then remove hard drive from old computer & add it as slave to new computer to copy webfiles, failure of that - use old HD for webfiles.

| Hi Pete,
Just install Windows 2000 on the Dell to an NTFS partition. Then:
1) If it's a splipstream build (with service packs and patches). Just
install IIS from Add/Remove Programs
2) If you're installing from the CD, first install IIS and then install
the latest service pack and patches.
3) Lock down IIS so it can't be hacked too easily.
4) Right click the "Default Web Site" and 'configure' the extensions.
5) Check all NTFS permissions on everything.
6) Make sure all computers are connected to a properly configured
network, and that you can log onto it as a domain administrator. Make
sure this Domain Admin is a member of the Administrators group on every
machine
7) Open the old site in Frontpage
8) Choose "Publish"
9) Enter HTTP followed by the name of the new server and click OK.
It will publish the old site to the new server. (Note any errors)
10) Check any scripts that may access the local FileSystem, and edit
their paths so they make sense on the new machine.
That should be it.

| That all sounds good, except for the part about loading IIS from the
CD. Every time I attempt to load IIS on the New Dell Win 2000 PC, I
get a popup asking for Service Pack 4 Disk?? These Dell's where
imaged over a network all at once, over a hundred of them to replace
our old Compaqs. So none of them have a CD , I was attempting to use
my copy of Windows 2000 Pro upgrade but I think it does not have the
files? Am I right.
So I attempted to load IIS 4.0 from the original Windows NT 4.0 CD and
it will not load because the PC is a Windows 2000 machine.
Am I stuck without a paddle? I need this done or management will be
very unhappy, oh by the way we are a state agency and there are no
funds to purchase new software-NONE WHAT EVER.

Just wipe the Dell and put fresh Win2k on there with latest SP.

Bad move.

No, that's totally crazy!
> Am I stuck without a paddle?
Nope.

It's the other way round, you will not be pleased with management if
they don't provide you with the right tools to do the job. Put it all in
writing, and sue them if they try to dismiss you over it. If you are
running Windows 2000, then it implies you have a license. If you have a
license then you can re-install it.
Check the license agreements.
If you are saying you don't have CD-ROM media at all, then it implies
you can not re-install the O/S if a machine crashes. That's NOT being
responsible.
