Author Search component is not including all files

Hi,

Running IIS 5, FP2000 Server Extensions, and FP2002
application.

The web site I am working on is for a corporate intranet.
The biggest function of this site is the ability to have a
search feature.

I have created a page which includes the search component
from FP2002. I have published the web to a server running
the above apps. The search function works for the most
part. However, many of the files are not being included
in the search results. These include JPG and PDF files.

Is there a way to include all the files on a web site,
just not the ones with HTM or ASP file extensions.

BTW, the main method for searching will be the product
name which is included in the filename of each file.

I am not sure whether I have the Index Services setup
properly. The service is running but I am unsure
how/where to configure it.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Since a JPG is an image, there's nothing you can really do. There aren't any
keywords in the document for Indexing Services to grab hold of. PDFs are
similar but there is a solution if you are the server admin. Adobe has an
ISAPI filter that you can add for Indexing Services to enable Indexing
Services to search inside PDF files. You can get a bit more power over
Indexing Services by programming against it directly in ASP. When present it
actually over-rides the really basic FP search functions and provides the
actual catalog data. Still, there are going to be just some files you can't
index because they don't have any data in them to index, or Indexing
Services doesn't have the capability to peek inside the file format to scan
(as is the case with PDFs, but the plug-in let's it look inside).

Hope this helps,

Mark,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I have one other
question. A very basic/stupid question!

How do I activate the Index Services? After looking
through some other newsgroup posts and knowledge base
items, I don't think I have the service activated.

Thanks again for your assistance.

You probably do have it activated. If it's installed (which is a normal
default a lot of the times) but not running the search page will generate an
error. To see if it's on, go to Control Panel | Administrative Tools |
Computer Management and look under the Services and Applications tree for
the Indexing Services node. If it isn't there then you can add it through
the Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows Components.
There should be some good info about Indexing Services at www.15seconds.com,
or at least offer a jumping off point. You can really do a lot with them as
far as customization and complex queries by hand-coding in ASP, but my
experience with this was too long ago to really be of any use (I've slept
since then) offering pointers on where to start.
