Author Graphics missing.
Richard Gutery

2004-05-30, 10:46 am

Hi all.

Up until about four hours ago, we had a FP web site and all was working
well. For some reason, many of the graphics are not showing up on child
pages. The 'place holders' are there, the graphics are in the appropriate
folder (perms are a-okay). This happens both internally and externally, so
it's not a router or firewall issue.

Many of the missing graphics are simple bullets that are 4k GIFs.

The site (both local and remote) have been recalculated.

If I republish the site, it works fine for a while then the same silliness
occurs again.

Any Ideas???

RG

It's because the image links are pointing to a file on your local machine
hard drive instead of the server.

For example:

file:///C:/Projects/FP2003%20Projects/MentorITS/images/icon4.gif

You must File | Import the images into your FP web on your local machine
(into a folder such as "images") before inserting on the page and saving,
before publishing to the host server.

Richard,

Looking at the source on this page:
http://www.mentorits.com/mentoring.htm

All the missing graphics (and stylesheet) are referenced with
file:///C:/Projects/FP2003%20Projects/MentorITS/filename. Somehow you've
managed to publish file paths instead of the normal relative URLs that are
on the web. Not sure how that would have happened. Are you using
FrontPage's publish capability or some other method such as FTP? Did you
have the web open in FrontPage when you edited the files, or just the files?
Always make sure you're working within a FrontPage Web/Site otherwise FP
won't know to convert file paths.

Thanks Tom. I actually started looking at that as well. I'm not sure what
happened here. I always edit the site using FP on open the site. All the
files and images were imported. In deed, most of the gifs were derived from
a theme.

Any ideas as to how to fix this (I don't really want to edit every file).

TX for the assist.

Jack, I read your and Tom's responses. Yeah quite amazing. I always edit the
site in FP (site open ...) and always import to Images or the appropriate
folder. I also publish with FP (the last time I did 'Overwrite all files').

Any ideas as to quickly fix this? I don't really want to edit every file.
I'm kinda thinkin I may have to dump the FP site on the server, and redo the
site locally???

BTW: thanks for the heads up on this.

Already started. one quick question (okay 2).

If I do a 'Find and Replace' - 'On all files' are there any problems (i.e.
will it work as expected? Second, if I do a global find and replace, how
will it affect my local copy?

ps: I've already archived my local copy in case of bad things happening.

TX.
