Author Front page error- System Exception: Access Violation
Larry

2004-06-09, 8:30 am

I recently received a new laptop from my company. It is
running Windows XP and has Front Page 2002 installed. I
was managing an intranet site with a previosly installed
version (2000 maybe, don't remember) on windows 2000.
Now when I try to edit my home page in Front Page 2002 I
get a "System Exception: Access Violation" error, and
everything locks up.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried the usual repairs in the sequence below:
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
4) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
5) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
6) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

I have tried the steps and am still unable to edit my
home page. I am trying to edit the home page on a team
web site. When I open the documents, lists, discussion,
etc. page, then click on edit with front page, it opens
it up and I am able to make changes. The problem only
happens when I try to modify the home page.

Thanks,
Larry

Are you opening your WSS/STS site first using File Open Web/Site in FP?

And you did find and delete all files in these steps
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Did to find the files in those folders?

If so, and the site is published provide a URL to the home page online

Doesn't matter if it's an intranet or local or internet
You will always have *.web files if you have opened and closed any FP web
- they are hidden known system types so make sure you search and Windows Explorer settings show them
You must look in the specific folder in my posts

I've searched through everything that is available to me
and can't find any FP temp or *.web files. Could they be
stored somewhere else in my companies network? I have
had our IS service people out to look at the my computer,
and they couldn't find the problem.
