Hi. I'm trying to publish from FP2003 (my first attempt)!
Everything looks fine in FP design and preview and also
in browser preview, but when I publish I don't get web
pages, I get a list of some kind...it just shows parent
directory, and all my FP folders, but it's not a web
page! Yikes! I'm uploading to geocities via FTP, is there
something obvious I'm doing wrong? Or am I saving my
pages in a weird way?

You need to see what they require for naming your home page, such as:
index.htm, index.html, default.htm, default.html, etc.

The directory tree that you are seeing occurs for one of two reasons. First is usually because you corrupted the FrontPage Server extensions by using an ftp program. You will now have to reenable them on your web server for the domain and all subdomains.

The second reason this happens is that you do not have a properly named index file. Apache Servers generally like .htm while Windows Servers like .html
You must use the proper extension according to what kind of web server you are publishing to.

Actually,

Apache Servers generally like .html while Windows Servers like .htm

Right you are Thomas! Thanks for catching my brain fart!
The original .html (hypertext markup lanuage) was Unix based and with DOS came the need for three-letter extensions. I have always used .html simply out of habit ,seeing it that way for ten plus years, and because I subscribe to a Unix server. I will be g
etting a new account on a Windows Server so I will have to get in the habit of using .htm. I understand that as long as one's index page contains the system appropriate extension, what extension you use on the rest of your pages is irrelevant. Maybe you c
ould confirm that. It would certainly prevent a lot of headaches resulting from such a simple, seemingly inconsequential thing.
I know there is a default setting in FP that allows one to have all new pages created with the desired extension.
What's really scarey is that I must be getting old and becoming more dyslexic! The next thing you know I will be driving down the road backwards! Yikes!

By the way, you don't happen to know if Geocities hosts all of their pages on Unix or not, do you? I couldn't tell by a quick search of the site.

Right you are Thomas! thanks for catching my " brain fart." I must be becoming more dyslexic in my old age. The next thing you know I will be driving down the street in reverse!
By the way, do you happen to know if Geocites hosts all their sites on Linux or Unix? A quick search of the site was not revealing but it appears to be Unix.

Windows IIS Server will support .html, but as you have indicated the only page where the extension
matters is the default document in the root or subfolders (if you just want to link to the folder
name) or if you are running any server-side scripts.

There is no default setting in FP for setting a preferred file extensions.

I have never used any of the free or low cost web host, but I would think that majority do run under
Unix/Linux since it is a free OS, as well as the Apache web server.

Right you are Thomas! Thanks for catching my brain fart! What’s really scarey is that I must be aging rapidly and becoming dyslexic in my old age! The next thing you know I will be driving down the street backwards. Yikes!
By the way, you don’t happen to know what platform Geocites happens to be using do you? A quick search revealed nothing at their web site but my best guess from looking at the account types is that they are hosting on Apache servers since some of them o
ffer PHP.

PHP and mysql can be run under Windows IIS as well, but not all Windows Host support them.
