Author simple step by step for enableing FPSE?

I am using Windows XP Pro, FrontPage 2000. My IIS is version 5.1.
I can not publish out of FP. I understand I need to install FPSE, so I did that via control panel, add/remove windows components. But now I don't know what to do. I know they have to be enabled for each of my 3 websites, I think it has something to do wit
h the MMC, but I've never used a MMC. Before this I had Windows 98SE, I just installed FP and it worked & Published. I am just self taught with no computer training, so some of these posts are over my head. Could someone please tell me step by step, after
I installed the FPSE, how do I make them work for each website? My webs have dynamic content on them, so they are not working.
Thank you very much!

What you don't explain is where you are trying to publsih to / from

You need IIS and the FP SE installed and enabled on your PC
ONLY if you are trying to publish these webs to your local PC as server based webs
(to be able to test any of the FP SE Run time features like FP forms or ASP/Databases)
If this is so, for instructions on installing and setting up the FP SE see the instructions below

If you just are trying to just publish the 3 webs to / from your PC from / to an online hosted server at some URL (like
http://www.yoursitenames.com), you Do Not Need IIS or the FP SE running on your PC. You can just use a disc based web like at
C:\Mywebname or in you My Webs folder

From your PC (disc based web) to the Web
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;EN-US;198523

From the Web (a URL) to your PC at say C:\MyWeb1 see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=205729

If you really need the FP SE See below
For the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions Support Center see:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...fh;en-us;fp10se

1) Download FP 2002 Server Extensions:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...l/fpse02win.asp
English ones are at:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...US/FPSE1002.exe
2) Download FP2002 Server Extensions Updates (and install in this order):
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...US/fpse1001.exe
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...US/fpse1002.exe
3) Install the Security Patch at:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;813380
4) Then to apply them see:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...doc/owsd02.mspx

Thank you Stefan, I have downloaded & installed things in the order you said (I thought XP Pro was suppose to have included them, they just needed to be set up) I went to the page you listed last, but don't understand enough of it. I don't have apache pat
ches (for unix only I guess?) I don't know how to create root webs, or virtual servers. I am wanting to publish disc based webs (they are on my computer) to a web host, Netfirms, that does have FPSE installed. When I try to use the http://www.mysite.com i
t comes back & says "An error occured accessing my FrontPage web files. Authors, if authoring against a web server please contact the webmaster for this sites server. Webmasters, please see the server's system log for more details." Netfirms has said ever
ything is good on their end, extensions are installed and ready to go.
So how do I install/setup/activate the downloaded extensions?
Thank you so much for trying to help us.

IIS under Windows XP Pro does install with the FP2000 extensions, but you must then configure them
for your web.

Can you open the site on your host either directly via FP, File Menu | Open Web or IE, Edit with FP?

Hello Thomas,
I think I've made it worse, I now have FPSE 2000 AND 2002 (I was directed to download & install those. I think they are there because they show up in IIS)
I tried to follow the directions on the page I was directed to, but can't. I clicked on the sharepoint administrator it asked for user name & password, and whatever it is, I don't know it, and it's MY computer! I can NOT open it by going to the website &
trying to edit with FrontPage (there is nothing on it at the moment, I had the content removed so I could publish it again out of FrontPage so the dynamic content would work, and Netfirms reset the FPSE on the site for me) You have exactly hit on the part
I am stuck at. I don't know what or how to do the IIS to make my 3 current website & future ones able to use dynamic content by have FPSE enabled. But now I think I have created another problem as I have both FPSE 2000 and 2002.
I have Windows XP Pro, FrontPage 2000, IIS 5 and want to publish my websites located on my computer via FrontPage to a web host (Netfirms) that does have FPSE installed.
Thank you so much for trying to help.

Let go back...forget about IIS and extensions for the moment, let se about getting your web(s)
publish to the remote servers.

Question: The web(s) that you want to publish, where are they currently located on your PC (path)

Ok, then open SAFBK directly in FP via File Menu | Open Web / Site then Select the File Menu |
Publish Web / Site and enter http://www.thedomainforSAFBK.com then your login info. just repeat the

Oh, if only it were that simple. When I try that (and I did again just before I'm posting this, I get this message ""An error occured accessing my FrontPage web files. Authors, if authoring against a web server please contact the webmaster for this sites
server. Webmasters, please see the server's system log for more details." Netfirms has said everything is good on their end, extensions are installed and ready to go. It doesn't even give me a sign in box. If I change the http:// to ftp:// I get a sign i
n box, but then it tells me I have 2 pages with dynamic content that will not publish. I need to be able to use the http:// but it won't even get to the sign in part. Netfirms is a company I've had the SAFBK site with for 2 years, so I know that web site
will function on that web server.

Thank you,
Sheila

Sheila,

The error message is being generated by the Netfirms' server, so that point to them as the problem.

However, I am not sure if I have ask this, but..

Can you open the site in IE, and then click Edit with FP and then open the site?

I can not use IE and edit in FrontPage. But there is nothing up on the web right now. Netfirms took it off and reset the extensions for me, thinking it might be a corrupt file (I don't think it was) I can't get anything up unless I use WS FTP, and I under
stand that is not a good thing to do, as it corrupts something...
Now what? Netfirms says extensions are in place and ready to receive website...
Thank you,
Sheila

Ok, try this publish your site to another folder on your HD, then open this folder in Windows
Explorer, delete ALL _vti folders, then use WS FTP to upload the site the server, then have Netfirms
run a check on the extensions and/or re-install the extensions.

The only items that will not work via this method of uploading will be functions and features that
require the run-time FP extensions, such as forms, guest book, discussion web, subwebs/subsites. but
once this is done you can try getting into the site via IE and the Edit with FP command.

Hello Thomas,
Well, I uninstalled office, then put the websites from the "my webs" folder on CD. Then deleted them all out of "my webs". I then re-installed office. And made the smallerst one up from scratch. I also uninstalled FPSE 2002, so now the only ones on there
are the ones Widows XP Pro come with. I think my problem is that I do not understand how to correctly set up a extensions enabled website (or is it called virtual server?) I have tried to follow the directions on one of MS knowledge base documents, but m
ust not be doing something right. Also, I think I do not have permissions set correctly, but do not know what I want them to be. I have 3 websites at this point I would like to be able to publish using the http:// BUT I have one website I maintain on a
daily basis that I need to use the FTP protocol on. It was created in FrontPage (not by me) but I am responsible for maintaining it daily. I can have both http:// and ftp:// websites can't I? I understand I can not do both http and ftp on the same website

Sheila,

I am not sure what is wrong with your setup, but I have installed Windows XP with IIS and Extensions
a few times, and each time it worked upon installation. With either FP2002 or FP2003. I could
immediately create a new web under the default web at http://localhost/webname by open the default
web, creating a folder, then right clicking the folder to convert it to a web / site (subweb /
subsite).

If you copy the webs a CD, you must first copy the webs folder from the CD to a place on your HD,
then remove all of the read-only attributes from all files, then open the web directly in FP and
publish to the final location, http://localhost/webname1, then repeat for each additional web.
