Failed upgrade from fpse2000 to fpse2002 on web site with remote r

If I try to update my host-header (i.e. not the default) site's fpse2000 to
fpse2002, I get the following error:
Cannot read or set the permissions for file, \\remotePath\: initializing the
SD failed

where \\remotepath is the root directory for the site. Any ideas? Should I
change the permissions on the remote directory?

www server is IIS5 on WIN2K Server SP4.
remote file server is WIN2K3 Server Enterprise Edition.
