Please help me with a transition to a new web host.
|
|
|
| Please help me with a transition to a new web host. I want to leave my
current site on the old server while I publish a copy of my site to the new
server.
My site is built with FP 03. Both hosts use FP Server Extensions, and the
extensions have been reinstalled on the new host.
I do not want to change where the domain name server is pointed until the
site is tested on the new server.
Therefore, I am trying to publish a copy of my site to the new server using
this type of url:
http://iphere/~usernamehere/
However, I get that long error message: Unable to open
http://iphere/~usernamehere/…
How can I have a copy of my site on 2 servers at once?
Thanks

| You need to check with your new host to see if you can publish to an IP Address or do you have to
wait until the domain is pointed.

| Yes, they allow publishing to: http://iphere/~usernamehere/
However, they say that FP can not handle this type of address. I am hoping
that there is a way.

| Try
http://www.iphere.com/~usernamehere/
because what you have enter is not a valid internet URL, but would maybe work on a LAN.

I am sure that someone has the answer. How can I have a copy of a FP site on

| I did it with a site a couple of years ago, and had to use the IP address
until it the DNS finally resolved. I had no problems publishing to the IP
address as http://xxx.xxx.xx.x (using the appropriate IP)

| Thanks for the encouragement. I have tried that, but I must be doing
something wrong. I tried again to use http://xx.xx.xxx.xxx/, but I still get
the same error: Unable to open…
I have reinstalled the FrontPage Extensions, and I have tried again using
http://iphere/~usernamehere/
I was careful to check for any extra spaces in the url. My host says that FP
can not publish unless it has the domain name. I think that there has got to
be a way. I am sure that many people would need to have a copy of a site on 2
servers at once during a time of transition.

| What type of web hosting account do you have a shared IP address or static IP address?
If it is a shared IP account, then you will have to wait until the domain is pointed to the new web
host. If your new web host can't help you, then you need to find another web host, because they most
likely will not be able to help you with any other issue you may have in the future.

| Thanks for the info. Is there a way to avoid some down time when I point my

| No, as it can take up to 72 hours (or longer) for all DNS servers around the world to update.
I found it best to do it on Fridays, but I use Network Solutions, which does updates at 5 PM and 5
AM EST daily.

| thats an easy task.
1. set up new dns host (new.yoursite.com) pointing to the new ip-adress of
the new hoster
2. have the new hoster add this website-name "new.yoursite.com" to your new
iis site
3. publish the web in frontpage to new.yoursite.com
once you're ready to switch hosts completely, just change domains and stuff.
you can change the dns timeout values to a lower setting some days before
the move, then you can fairly fast switch hosts.
