Problem with discussion threads
|
|
| Aleksandar Sarovic 2005-02-07, 5:54 pm |
| My machine died few days ago. I installed windows WP Professional again.
Then I republished my web site www.sarovic.com and lost existing discussion
threads. Files still exist on the server but links in threads are deleted.
Once I fixed the problem by filling the forms again on line by using
existing text. Must be a smarter way.
Also my machine publishes without problems on remote machine and on public
server I use but cannot publish on IIS of the same machine. Got message:
Unable to open "local folder" Possible causes FP Server Extensions. I
updated them on line. I installed IIS after SP2. Is that a problem? Other
possible errors are excluded. I am able to ftp my web localy but didn't do
it because it cannot support functionalities my web has.
Thanks in advance

| You should never publish from you PC local web to a site w/ a DW
- if your host supports subwebs any DW should always be created as a subweb
- that way publishing to the root won't wipe out the DW
Only way to retrieve the old DW is to ask you host if they have a backup to restore from
Then open your restored root web online in PC and Publish to your PC
About the only way to convert your restored DWs to subwebs is to publish your root to each new subweb and then open them and delete
content not related to that DW

| Thanks Stefan,
I lost all of the discussion threads once long time ago. The files were not
missing so that I was able to copy and paste them manually to the input form
and to recovery the thread. After that I was more clever so that made screen
shoots with which I can recovery the threads in a few hours. But your idea
is much better. I asked my internet provider whether they support subwebs
and they responded to me positively. They did not tell anything more. Does
subweb have its own IP? Does it mean I have to buy a new IP? Any material
about it to read?

| Just after I send a previous message got an idea how to do it. I just need
to ad a folder name to my web site. For example www.sarovic.com/discussion
and publish the whole site there. Then I need to delete everything except
discussions and files that support it. Then I need to insert a new link that
connect web and subweb and that is it. Am I right?

| You need to add a folder to your site, then right-click it and choose
"convert to web"
Then publish to the subweb etc.
