Saving files in root web extremely slow...FP 2000, 2000 Server

| When saving any page anywhere in the root web folder, it takes seemingly
forever to finish saving. If I manually stop the save process, the file save
dialogue comes up, I close that, check the file, and its been saved ok.
Opening the root web works fast, and saving a file anywhere else in any sub
web or subfolder works fast too. Its just saving a file to the root web that
is the problem.
I also get these 2 app log messages constantly through each day:
Both are Event ID: 1000, Source for both are: Front Page 4.0.
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
(OS Error #13 Message: Permission denied)
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
http://thevanmancan.com - Error #20002 Message: Cannot open file
"service.lck" for writing.
In the IIS Manager, under server extensions for the web site, it shows (ver
4.0.2.4426)
Could I have the wrong extensions installed? Is this even relevant to my
issue?
Using 2000 server, Front Page 2000. I am also editing at the web server
itself and Front Page is also installed right on the web server.
Thanks very much in advance of any help.

| Have your host fund and delete the service.lck file on the server root web

| Thanks for the reply Stefan. I am the host, and tried that but it didnt do
anything for the slowdown. It also made a new service.lck file. I timed it,
it takes 55 seconds to save an html page with no links, pictures or anything
fancy.
I did try changing the default web location to another location, and got the
message that FP couldnt find the service.lck file. After copying the whole
_vti_pvt folder to the new location with just a couple html files, it
cleared up! Although, none of the other subwebs I have were there, so I had
to change it back until I fix it. At least I know that there is some kind of
content there that needs to be purged from the current location or left
behind on a location change for the website.
Thanks again for the reply. You gave me a major boost towards solving this.

| Ok, I still dont know what it really was, but its fixed. I made a backup
copy of the entire _vti_pvt folder, and then deleted the entire folder. I
had to re-create the folder and put the service.lck file from the backup
into the folder to get frontpage started again. It worked! I put all the
files back one at a time to see which file was the offender. I got all the
files back except the service.lck file (although restored already) and it
still works. Just deleting the service.lck didnt do the trick. I am thinking
that the act of recreating the folder may have reset the folder permissions
or cleared it up somehow, as none of the files in there seemed to be the
offender. I even rebooted the server and it is still ok.
Again, thanks for giving food for thought!
