Author Link bar update not getting to server

Hi,

I have a problem with FP 2003 and would be most grateful if anyone out there
knows the solution and could tell me.

I bought a template for a site which uses FrontPage Navigation and link
bars. The link bars show OK when uploaded to the server but changes I make
to them don't get up to the server. I have tried copying and pasting a link
bar onto another section of a page, shows fine in preview and design view,
does not show when I upload the page. I am only uploading the individual
pages as there are databases etc that have changed on the live site and I
don't want to overwrite. Do I need to publish some other file they depend
on?

Thanx,

Andrew

Yes, if the navigation structure was changed, or if a theme is used. The
web MUST be published to allow the new navigation structure/link bars to be
incorporated into the extensions' meta files (which are never copied between
sites.) If the change was just style or theme it may be necessary to open
the remote site and remove, then re-insert the link bars there. In this
case publishing will not be required, but the local and remote webs will be
out of synch.

To avoid uploading files you do not want to overwrite (databases), in the
local web mark them as "Do not publish". Select the files from the Folder
List, right-click and choose "Do not publish" from the context menu.

FYI, the newsgroup microsoft.public.frontpage is obsolete and not carried by
many news-servers.

Andrew,

check to see where the link bar is pointing when it looks for the image
representation of the link bar. One problem that people run into is the
fact that templates can seem easy if you have a standard website, but if
you start to have different folders than what the creator intended you
to have, it can cause problems. If you don't see the image of the link
bar, it is a big clue that the server can't find the image.

Hi Ron,

Thanks very much for taking the time to help out. All sorted out now thanks,
in light of this I am now editing it online rather than locally and
publishing bits.

Best regards,

Andrew

I suggest you keep a local backup of your web. After each on line
publishing session, use File->Publish with the destination set to a folder
on your hard disc. (You may wish to set the databases to not publish if
these are large - but make other arrangements to back them up).
