Your hosting company needs to get the latest version of the extensions
from the Ready-to-Run Site. They will need to create a new
mod_frontpage.so
or recompile apache with the latest code. This should resolve the
problem with
the email invitations for your password protected subweb. Your hosting
company pointed you in the wrong direction concerning the .htaccess
files.
