Problem with FP2002 server extensions/FP2003/Win XP pro SP2
|
|
| Kevin Walsh 2005-03-17, 5:53 pm |
| Hi,
I just installed FP2002 server extensions on my IIS 5.1 server. But when I
try to create a new site in FP2003, something strange happens. First, in the
'name' box it says http://<--nohost-->/mysite (forgive the hyperlink),
rather than http://localhost/mysite as I would have expected. If I change it
to something like http://localhost/kevinssite, the 'creating' dialog box
comes up, but almost immediately disappears, leaving me back at the 'New'
dialog box.
Have I missed something out? I saw something on the MS site about extending
the server once the extensions are installed, but when I tried to access the
HTML admin page, I couldn't. Is that step necessary?
Thanks,
Kevin

| You can only have 1 root web (http://localhost/)
Open it in FP and create subwebs in it

| Hi Stefan and Tom,
Thanks for your answers. Perhaps I didn't explain the problem properly, so
I'll try again:
I know that there's only one root web. If I type http://localhost or
http://kevin-desktop (name of my PC) in IE, I get the IIS admin stuff. So I
know that's up and running. I downloaded the FP2002 server extensions and
installed them.
In FP2003, I choose File, New, Web site templates. In the 'Specify the
location for the new Web site' box, FP doesn't pick up localhost.
Instead, it says http://<--nohost--> and a suggested name for the new site
(mysite). If I replace <--nohost--> with localhost, then type a slash and
the name of my new web (a subweb, obviously) it pops up the 'creating'
message box, then disappears. And then nothing.
I can't open http://localhost as Stefan suggested. It says it's not valid.
So I'm wondering if I missed out a step. After I downloaded and installed
the server extensions, should I have done something else? I've seen
references to extending the web server using the Sharepoint administrator
(Shart, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Sharepoint Administrator). Is
that just another way of installing the server extensions, or is it an
*additional* step that must be carried out? In any case, I can't get into
that feature: it tells me I'm not authorised to view the page, even though
I'm logged onto my PC as administrator.
Any ideas?
Thanks so much,
Kevin

| What if you browse to http://localhost/ in IE and use File Edit w/ FP
Yes, open the IIS snap (in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Sharepoint Administrator) and select the root web - All task should
have the FP SE options on it

| Hi Stefan,
Yes, opening it in IE, then edit with FrontPage works. If I try to create a
site, the 'Add to current site' is greyed out.
It looks like FP just isn't registering that localhost has FP extensions.

Could it be that the IIS component isn't installed? I don't see the SharePoint
Administrator on one of my WinXP Pro SP2 workstations. On the other workstation,
on which the IIS server was already installed, IIS is listed in the Administrative
tools and it allows me to set a new virtual directory, and to configure the
SharePoint server extensions.

| Hi everybody,
Many thanks for all your suggestions. I've finally solved it by doing the
most obvious thing possible: unstalling and starting all over again!
I installed IIS from scratch, selecting *all* the components, including the
FP2000 extensions, which weren't installed the first time. Then, I checked
that everything worked. It did. FP could see localhost. Then, I installed
FP2002 extensions. And...it still worked!
I'm a happy bunny today :-)
