Frontpage allows for a search template to be used on a website. I have
followed the instructions with frontpage and created the search page template
and published it. However it is not entirely working, So i guess i am missing
some steps that were not in the tutorial. After submitting a search, I am
redirected to this: http://"webservername"/"websitename"/_derived/nortbots.htm

FPSE are installed for the site, im not sure why I am getting this page,
either i did not fully set up the search page, or there was existing
frontpage search information that needs to be removed and readded. any
thoughts?

Getting FPSE to work is a two-step process. Step 1) install them to the
box. Step 2) configure the Virtual Web Server to use them. If you do not
do both, you will get the message that FPSE are not installed. Open the
IIS Manager console, expand the sites group, select your VWS, right-click
it, and follow the instructions on how to configure your VWS to use FPSE.

The nortbots.htm suggests that you FTPed the web to the server, or the
server does not have FrontPage extensions installed and running.
FrontPage forms, including the search form, *must* be http published
to a server running FrontPage extensions.

File->Publish Web/Site, then type in the URL of your website in the
form
http://example.com or http://www.example.com

Since you appear to have used FTP, you may need to check and repair,
or possibly re-install, the extensions on your server. FTP can (but
not always) break the extensions.

If i am able to publish the website with frontpage, i would assume i have
done both of those steps properly?

The only time FTP was used, was before the server extensions were installed.
after installing the server extensions i have only used the publish feature.
If a website is already present, and FPSE are installed, does this corrupt
any FP information that was already on that site?

So here are the steps i have taken:
1) remove subweb
2) remove server extensions 2002
3) remove website documents and folders from remote server
4) configure server extensions 2002
5) create subweb
6) open FrontPage 2003 and publish site

I am not getting the message that server extensions are not created, I am
now getting an error
"The page cannot be found" for nortbots.htm

on the search page i found this is the following code:
"onsubmit="location.href='_derived/nortbots.htm';return false;"

Geeze, what is going on here?

I have recalculated the web and subweb and still no dice.

Do you have a link to the site?
nortbots.htm only appears in four cases:
1) You are testing on a disc-based website
2) You are testing on a website that does not have server extensions
installed or running
3) The site (or form page) was FTPed from a disc-based web, or
published using a FTP address for the destination. Publish must be to
a URL of the form http://example.com
4) There is a bug associated with FrontPage98 which causes this
problem.

Item 4 does not apply, which leaves the other 3 to choose from...

If you install extensions on an existing site any webbots (search form
in this case) would probably be rebuilt. Use Tools->Recalculate
Hyperlinks to make sure.

If none of the above conditions apply, open the site on the server in
FrontPage, and remove the search component from the page. Save the
page. Recalculate Hyperlinks.
Open the page and re-insert the search component. Then test. If this
produces the nortbots error, there is something amiss with the
extensions on that server. (There may be other errors regarding Index
Server - but that's another story...)

thanks Ronx, the url is
http://iiss1dev.first.cibc.com/tool...cess/search.htm

1)The website was created on the local machine im using, then i publish it
to the webserver. I think therefore by definition this is a "disk-based
website"? im not entirely clear on the distinction between
creating/maintaining server and disk based websites. If this is the case,
how do i go about fixing this ?

2) The server extensions are installed and running, you can verify this here:
http://iiss1dev.first.cibc.com/_vti_inf.html
http://iiss1dev.first.cibc.com/_vti_bin/shtml.dll

3) Remote Web server type:
FrontPage ro SharePoint Services
The Remote Web server supports DIstributed Authoring and Versioning.

4)The extensions are not running version 98, as described here:
http://iiss1dev.first.cibc.com/_vti_inf.html

I Followed your other instructions. Removed webbot code on the server side,
saved, recalculated. Reinserted webbot code and saved. Now the search tool
is missing on the search page. instead of a text field and button i get the
message:
"[FrontPage Search Component]"

question: in frontpage after removing the search page from either the local
or remote site, when you select new->template->search, is it supposed to have
a default title of "search.htm"? because in frontpage its giving me
"new_page_1.htm" when saving?

On your machine the site is a disc-based site, accessed using a file
path such as
C:\myweb\myWebSite
On the server it is a Server-based site, accessed using a URL such as
http://example.com

Can't. No access to the site.

The FP98 error refered to the program FrontPage 98, not to the
extensions.

This indicates there is something not set up or configured that the
extensions require.
Has an Index Service catalogue been created for the site, and
configured correctly?
Has IIS been configured to use Index Service
If Windows 2003 server, has Index Service been "allowed" in the IIS
MMC?
If Index Service does not appear in the list of services, then it will
have to be reinstalled.

My FP2003 also produces "new_page_1.htm" for a new search page.

I think you can publish without FPSE being installed, but I may be wrong in

I appreciate the help.

I guess the site is strictly internal.
No, no index Service or catalogue appears anywhere in iis. This would most
likely be the problem.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...uwebov_6twz.asp
Provides me some general outlines, but what i really need is a procedure i
can follow to get the indexing service going for this web. Are there any good
resources? or can you provide a simple breakdown?

Thanks,
I have the indexing tool working in MMC perfectly.
The only prolbem is I am still getting the "[frontpage search component]"
message where a search bot should be. I tried recalculating the hyperlinks
but to no effect.

you mentioned something about configuring the catalog in iis? is there more
to just clicking the box under home directory for "index this site" ?
