The search tool is still missing in action. I have searched the forum and
have yet to come up with a solution. Does the search tool actualy work on a
windows 2003 platform? Could webdaiv be running in the background somewhere
and giving me all these problems?

Here is a brief Slideshow of the Windows server2003 settings:

The forums here have been a tremendous support, and i applaud all your
efforts. I recently reinstalled the indexing service and then removed and
reinstalled fpse. After which i have restarted the indexing service, recycled
the webpage, and recalculated hyperlinks. I deleted and created a new search
page, and then recalculated hyperlinks again. I am still not getting the
frontpage search component. Is there a certain screenshot which would tell
you if it is installed?or have i missed something like a button to start
webbot? :P

Is there anything from the following screens that is wrong besides the
"frontpage search component" text in screens 7 & 8?

much appreciated

It looks like frontpage does not recognize the search feature which it
implements itself, how is this possible?

I just had the same problem.

My solution was to create a new virtual server and publish the old
website to the new server.

1) Create new virtual server pointing to a new folder.
2) Set up a catalogue in Index Service for new server
3) Publish old site to new location.
4) Delete old web and index service catalogue.

Result - everything works as it should, though unique permissions on
folders and subwebs have to be re-established.

I never use the default web site.

It's whatever address you gave to the new virtual server - either IP
address or Host-Header. I use IP addresses and multi-home the server.

Wow, the search function works now that I have created a new web site.
thanks!

In the event of the production not wanting to use a new website, is there no
way fpse 2002 search will work under the default web site?

I tried removing the extensions (but leaving the meta data intact)
from my broken site, then reinstalling them. That did not work.
I have not tried removing the extensions entirely, then reinstalling -
that might work for you, but will have to rebuild subwebs,
permissions, navigation, shared borders etc.
(Publishing from the new site you have working will re-establish all
these except the permissions, if you delete the old web first, before
re-installing the extensions.) But I have not done this, so cannot
comment on the results.

I performed a full uninstall of frontpage server extensions 2002 (removing
meta data) through sharepoint administrator.

I then configured the default webpage with FPSE again. Instead of
republishing my site to it i have devised a faster way to determine if the
search functionality works.

I simply opened up frontpage to the default website. I then created a new
search page form the templates. Next I right clicked on that search page's
properties in frontpage. I get the following error:

(1) Page "search.htm" contains an unknown FrontPage component: "Search".

however, when i open the new website and do the same thing, i receive no
error.
