I recently started having a problem where my web sites that have the
Frontpage server extensions version 5.0.2.6738 all seem to have their
extensions just quit working for some reason. The files are still there,
they just don't work. When I try to edit a web site I am no longer prompted
for my name/password and the pages that have an email form don't work.

I checked the web server logs and there is one thing different in there.
Normally, when I start to edit a page the following 3 lines show up in the
log (I removed the IP addresses from the log sample):

2005-06-17 14:44:59 GET /_vti_inf.html - 80 - Mozilla/4.
0+(compatible;+MS+FrontPage+6.0) - 200 0 0
2005-06-17 14:44:59 POST /_vti_bin/shtml.dll/_vti_rpc - 80 - MSFrontPage/6.0
- 200 0 0
2005-06-17 14:44:59 POST /_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.dll - 80 - MSFrontPage/6.
0 - 200 5 0

When the extensions aren't working only the first two lines above show up.
Is there something not happening in the shtml.dll that should be?

I can re-install the extensions and they start working. But after "something
happens" they quit working again.

I've tried full uninstalls of the extensions from the web admin page and
that hasn't fixed this problem either.

Not sure if SP1 is even related to this problem as I installed it a few
weeks before this problem appeared.

There are some issues w/ Win 2003 SP1 & the FPSE
- contact customer support (there is no charge for security SP generated problems)

Stefan,
As I noted in a post earlier I too was having trouble with FPSE (on
Win2003 Server) since Upgrading to SP1. My only solutions to get
things back was to roll back the Service Pack. All it working again.

A note to anyone else who may need to Roll back SP1. Make a back up of
your Metabase just before the rollback and restore it aftwards. I saw
some posts in this group that might indicate some issues. This worked
for me. After the rollback go to Windowsupdate.microsoft.com to get the
other HOT fixes..

version 5.0.2.6738 is not the original version that comes with FP extensions
2002 on the 2003 server CD. It is 5.0.2.5012. Does anyone have any idea as to
the updates that are included that roll the version from 5.0.2.5012 to
5.0.2.6738? I have not found anything that states what is upgraded in the
core extensions themselves that moves the version number up when SP1 is
installed for windows server 2003.

Thanks,

R

Microsoft has acknowledged that this is an issue and has a workaround
(http://support.microsoft.com/?id=896861).
