Every time I try to change the configuration of any web, either on the
server itself or from Front Page on a workstation, it fails.

FPSE Administrator on the server throws errors such as:
Error 5 opening registry key "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server
Extensions\Ports\Port /LM/W3SVC/1129397164:".for each web.

Front Page on the workstation throws:
The server extensions were unable to access the file "roles.ini". Please
check the file permissions.

I checked the permissions on all the roles.ini files and they look good and
are not inherited, per another post on this board. Also checked the
registry entries and they look good as well; and applied Method 2 from MSKB
#896861 (created regkey
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Lsa\MSV1_0
\BackConnectionHostNames.

Please Help!

Thanks,
Jon

Unfortunately, I'm running Front Page 2003 and Office 2003. The update
won't install on either the server or workstation. I'm not so sure it's an
issue on the workstation since the errors occur on the server side. Running
W2K3 Standard w/SP1 ; FWIW, the server is also a DC and is running AD in
native mode (no legacy domain support)..

Now that you've told us the O/S, there have been many issues with W2K3 and
the FP SE after installing SP1. The standard answer is to contact Microsoft
Support. Many people have also uninstalled SP1.

Looking further, all roles and users for every web disappeared; couldn't
remove FPSE from any web...totally hosed, but...

I did a repair from Add/Remove programs (I had installed the downloadable
FPSE 2002) and everything's back to normal (at least until the next fiasco).

Dont'cha love this stuff?

Thanks for your help,
Jon

Thanks for the warning...I'd like to know more about this whenever you have
time...I guess I'll uninstall it, go with the version from Add/Remove
windows components and wait for the fallout.

They are not made to be compatible with pre-installed same version on O/S.
They can be used to upgrade an earlier version that comes with earlier O/S.

Understood.

I did the uninstall of downloaded /and install of preinstalled version
without any fallout.

The only (perhaps unrelated issue occurs when publishing "Remote to local"
or "Synchronize". It frequently throws an " Unable to locate server at port
80..." or "An error occured accessing your Windows SharePoint site files..."
Seems to occur whan transferring a large number of files...maybe a buffer
somewhere is overflowing; I don't really knowfor sure. The workaround for
me is to go into the "Files to Publish" view and select small batches of
files on the Remote Web site and hit the blue left arrow to push them to the
Local Web site. It's a lot of manual intervention, but at least it gets the
job done.

Thanks for you insight,
Jon
