RE:Windows 2003 Server - SP1 / IIS 6.0 / FPSE 2002 Installed

In this example I am extending server extensions to the example domain:
www.mydomain.com” but the issue happens with ALL sites I have tired to
install extensions on.

I just installed FPSE 2002 on a new HDD with a fresh OS/IIS installation. I
have all my websites and mail working.

It appears that I am successfully installing FPSE on the website as I am
properly transported over to the “Extend Virtual Server with FrontPage Server
Extensions 2002” in the browser and then prompted to specify the
“Administrator” user name, as expected.

As I have done in the past with previous installations, I accept the default
“SERVERNAME/adminlogin” and click the “Submit” button. Then I am taken to
the “Server Administration” page where all my websites are listed, again as I
would expect.

I then click on the “Administration” link next to the
http://www.mydomain.com” ; website I just extended, and I am properly taken
to the “Virtual Server Administration” page. There I click on the same URL
as shown that is next to “go to site administration” at the top of the page.
As I should, I get a normal login prompt.

THIS IS THE ISSUE:

I enter (no quotes “”) in “SERVERNAME/adminlogin” OR “SERVERNAME\adminlogin”
OR “adminlogin” (I used to just have to enter “adminlogin”) and the Server
Administrator password but I am not provided access. The login box keeps
popping up. Then I am transported to the following page after three or four
tries: http://www.mydomain.com/_vti_bin/_v...ge=webadmin.htm
which says
“You are not authorized to view this page”

When I try to login again, the login field has been auto populated with
www.mydomain.com/adminlogin” which does not work either.

As suggested by a support tech earlier, the “adminlogin” server admin
account needed to have FULL CONTROL to the ALL the Website folders. I made
sure this is the case but has had no effect.

Thanks - Jody

You are failing in one of two areas:

1. Your client is not successfully passing authentication.
2. Your client is passing authentication, but Windows is not accepting it.

To find out which one you're seeing, you can get a trace (from a remote
client) using Ethereal. If you can only trace from the same machine, you
can use Fiddler. (http://www.fiddlertool.com). If you want to know what to
look for, you can view my tutorial on troubleshooting authentication issues.
It's on my Web site.

It may be a simple permissions issue. If it is, Filemon from SysInternals
will give you the info you need. (http://www.sysinternals.com).

Hi Jim,

It may be important to mention that I am the server admin and when I try to
login to the site administration I am doing this from within the server. I
do not have Clients (customers) or network clients trying to authenticate at
this point. I manage most of the sites on my server and the ones I don't I
can not eve get in to create a logging for them.

When I install the extensions, by default the admin login for all sites I
extend are supposed to use that login. By the way I am using Windows
Authentication and have tried Basic Authentication on specific sites, the
DefaultSite and the Windows ShaprePoint website in IIS.

So with that said do you still feel that running the fiddlertoos product
will be helpful?
Thanks - Jody

Yes. When I say "client", I'm not talking about a person. I'm talking
about the client/server relationship. Your client is your Web browser.
