I have not been able to get my FP Server Extensions to work (hit counter,
etc).

I have posted a screen shot on
http://www.northoftheneck.com/NoServerInUse.htm that seems to indicate I do
not have a server in place to support the extensions. What does that mean?
I thought Windows XP Pro running IIS was a server, or is that a wrong
assumption?

XP Pro comes with IIS 5.1 web server. Did you install it, and install the
extensions to the server?

Yes, see http://www.northoftheneck.com/IIS5.1Server.htm that seems to
indicates that IIS5.1 is installed and running.

However, I still get the "No Cuurent Server in Use" message as indicated on
http://www.northoftheneck.com/NoServerInUse.htm

You haven't opened your server based web in FrontPage. You appear to have
simply opened the file on your c drive.

My server extensions are not working. Is that because I do not have a "web"?

I posted http://www.northoftheneck.com/OpenWeb.htm showing that I am trying
to open my web. In the background, it shows that I have opened the file
Default.htm but there is no web name just folder names that I thought were
webs because of the blue circle on the folder. Based on your response I'm
confused as to whether I have a "web" or just a collection of pages or what's
the difference.

The http://www.northoftheneck.com/IIS5.1Server.htm page is a shot of the ISS
admin program.

Once again, you are not using a server based web. You are simply opening
something in your c drive.

If you haven't created a server based site, you must do so.

Do you know where can I get the instructions to setup a server based web?

I take it by your response that creating a server based web site involves
more than installing IIS5.1 on XP Pro. I have three books "Discovering Front
Page", "Fast Smarter Fron Page", and "Windows Sharepoint Servcies inside
Out". None of them seem to point out that I need to take additional steps to
setup a server based web than installing IIS5.1 on XP Pro. Obviously, there
must be more to it.

There's really nothing to it. You just point FP to create the site at
http://servername/webname (in the case of local development it's
http://localhost)

That's really it. The screenshots you show are being done through the file
system, which is why you have a disk-based web and not a server-based web.
Whenever you open or create a web using the file system instead of going
directly through the web server it sets the web as a disk-based web, simply
meaning that it's being developed locally without the benefit of a web
server. This can actually mess with the web server and FP since they get
confused as to what the case really is. Some features no longer are
available or may stop working from within FP. Basically, always open through
http and your web server directly and not through the file system. Even
though the file system is located under a directory bound to the web server,
it will still mess it up.

Hope this helps,

I assume that when you say "just point FP to create the site" you meant the
"Publish Web" option from the file menu. When I tried that, I got the screen
http://northoftheneck.com/http_localhost.htm message. When I tried the "Open
Web" option, I got http://northoftheneck.com/local_host.htm message.

Maybe there is a different way to point FP to create the site or is there
some admin function not enabled?

Is there more material I can read on this? It seems odd that I have not
located any yet.
