I use a local server on my Windows XP Pro PC to publish and preview my web
site as I create it in Front Page 2003. When I attempted to publish there
recently, I got an error message saying the site could not be opened. Server
error: Error 5 opening registry key "SOFTWARE/Classes/.3g2. The entry is in
the Registry. I haven't been able to find any information that helps me fix
this problem. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Kathy, some questions:

Are you able to view the website from the browser?
What were the last 2 or 3 pieces of software installed on the server?
Do you have any embedded video in your site?

3g2 is the file extension for next generation wireless video. It could be
that a new version of Quicktime or Realplayer has screwed up permissions or
security settings for the folder you web site is in.

I would try to:

Restart IIS, try again
Reboot the server, try again

If that doesn't work,

Remove any video files (if applicable) in the web site.
Uninstall Quicktime or Real Player (if applicable)

If all else fails, I'd back up my registry and delete that key.

but that's just what I would do, let us know

Dan,

Thanks for the suggestions. I can view the website from the browser with no
problem so I guess the IIS is OK. No embedded video. I uninstalled RealPlayer
and now the message tells me that there is a problem at Registry Key
"SOFTWARE/Classes/.ero" which is an Encarta entry. I'll try uninstalling that
to see what happens.

I'll let you know what happens when I uninstall.
Thanks again.

I uninstalled Encarta and now I can publish to the IIS with no problem. Is
there any way I can use Real Player and Encarta and avoid this trouble with
publishing?

Also, on a second PC, I can't publish because I get the message "Could not
find a web server at URL on port 80. Please check to make sure that the Web
server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly."

I can open the current site there from my browser and as far as I can tell
the settings are correct. Can you help?

Thanks again. Kathy
