Author Problem with Server Extension and FP 2003

I created a website using FP 2003 - very simple and works fine. On one of
the pages I added a form that is meant to collect some basic information
from the user and email them to me upon pressing the Submit button.

I had Server Extensions enabled on my host server, but I still haven't
managed to make this work. What actually happen on my webspace once
extensions are enabled? Does it add any files to my space (e.g. create
those _XXX directories and add files in them)? It is possible that I
accidentally deleted one/some of those, and before I look further into my
code I want to make sure that the infrastructure is in place to make it
work.

Any help will be much appreciated.

J.

Installing the extensions adds several folders with names starting
with _vti_. These cannot be seen in FrontPage. Open the site in
FrontPage, then use Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks
If you can do the above then the extensions are probably sound and
complete.

As for the form - what errors are you getting? Has the form-to-email
transport been configured in the extensions (ask your host)?

Tried it and seem to work without a problem.

Well, for a start, when I try to publish the site (using ftp) a window pops
up that says that the htm file that contains the form will not work properly
because the server does not have Server Extensions or SharePoint installed.
Well, it does have extensions enabled - I am sure of that.

Just noticed that my host (Yahoo SmallBusiness) only supports FrontPage up
to v2002, and I have been using v2003...

Luckily I have v2002 as well. What do I need to do to convert my website to
be v2002 compatible?

Do not use FTP - FTP will break the extensions.
Open the local web, then use File->Publish Site / Web (wording varies
with FP version)
For the location of the web site you are publishing to, use a URL
similar to
http://www.example.com
(change example.com to your domain name.) Note the protocol is
http:// NOT ftp://
Then Publish.

I have four remote web server options to choose form:
1. FrontPage or SharePoint Services
2. WebDAV (Distributed Authoring and Versioning)
3. FTP - the one I have used so far
4. File System

I have tried WebDAV (following your instructions regarding http and
www.xxx.com) and got an error message "unable to connect" due to either: 1.
server does ot have Server Extensions installed (it does...) 2. Server out
of service (it is not - I tried using ftp...) 3. Proxy connections
incorrect (I don't use proxy...) 4. An error at the web server (???).

I also tried the FrontPage/SharePoint option above and got a similar error
message.

Any idea how to proceed?

Thanks again.

FP2003 supports everything that FP2002 supports, and the FP2002 Extensions are the latest & last
version

Yahoo does support FP2003 - only they do not know that. Shows how bad
a host they are.
Also, there are many reports in this forum regarding Yahoo hosting and
the failure of FrontPage forms, especially those that use email.

Chose option 1. Your previous use of FTP may have corrupted the
extensions, which will have to be reinstalled.

Now you are telling about it... Well, my company have used Yahoo well
before my time, and I cannot see them changing it very soon.
Wouldn't have been my 1st choice host.

Why would FT complain when I try to publish the site (using ftp) that the
htm file that contains the form will not work properly because the server
does not have Server Extensions or SharePoint installed (which it does)?

Also, specific to Yahoo SmallBusiness but maybe someone will know the
answer. When I try to use option 1 as you suggested (Yahoo asks you to drop
the www fwhen entrying the URL) I am prompted for a UID/Pass pair. Itried
both muy admin and ftp pairs, and both are refused. Do I need another UID
for that? I know I can email them, but it willl take around two days to
resolve...

Because in order for any FP components to work, then must be publish to a server that has the FP
extensions (Sharepoint) via FP's http mode, not via FTP.

When the extensions are installed, you would use one of the follow formats to publish:

http://www.yourdomainname.com
http://yourdomainname.com

Managed to move a step forward on the ay to resolving this.

I can now publish using the web interface - I had to disable my uid with
Yahoo, and then reactivate it and everything started to work...

I now managed to publish everything, but I still cannot get the form that is
meant to emails its contect to do so.

When i click Submit I get an error message that says: "FrontPage Error.

User: please report details to this site's webmaster.

Webmaster: please see the server's system log for more details. "

Simple question - where is that log file? I have full access to the host
server, I am just not sure where to look for the info.

Thanks in advance.

PS: despite installing and activating FT SE (I am with Yahoo Small
Business), and then reseting it again, just to make sure, I still get a
reply that FP SE are not installed on my site from
http://www.dnswiz.com/fptype.asp.

You need to check with Yahoo to see if they allow you to use that function, as they must configure
the extensions to all it.

You can also test by:

typing in your website root URL with /_vti_inf.html ex:
http://www.mysitename.com/_vti_inf.html and you will see whether your site
has them installed and enabled.

Well, his is what I get:
FrontPage Configuration Information
In the HTML comments, this page contains configuration information that the
FrontPage Explorer and FrontPage Editor need to communicate with the
FrontPage server extensions installed on this web server. Do not delete this
page.

Des it mean that it is or it isn't installed/enabled?

Ronx

It means the extensions are installed on the site. If you View source
you can see the version installed.

Bingo! i works - thanks a lot for the tip.

Next stop then - where can I find the system log file to see why my form is
not working as per my original mail below?

If this is your server, then look under Admin Tools | Event Log Viewer

It is not MY server - it is a website hosted Yahoo Small Business - I just
have all the access privilages.

I assume that FP SE writes the error somewhere - but where?

Since it is not your server, you do not have access the log file. You would have ask Yahoo to
provide you with a copy of the content that applies to your account at the time you tested the form.

Thanks.

I asked Yahoo to investigae on my behalf, but with only email support I am
not holding my breath...

I just noticed the note on the bottom half of this help page (starts with
"Please note") - pretty careful wording on their part I thought... The way I
read it is that thry know that there is a bug with their system, but have no
idea how to fix it (their suggested workaround in not suitable for me). Is
that correct?

Basically they are saying they do not support the FP Form Handler sending form data via email.

Thats' what I also thought.... So much so for claiming to support FTSE
then...

Only one last thing.-I removed the email property, i.e. asked the form to
only save to the result to _private/form_results.htm (which is there on the
server). I still get the same error message! Doesn't look as if it is the
email that causes the error.

Any more thoughts?

Each web host has the ability to support or not support certain features of the FP extensions, which
can also be limited by the server OS.

Just spoke to Yahoo support. The guy seem very well informed, and according
to him Yahoo only host on UNIX servers, and MS don't offer FT 2k3 drivers
for UNIX, their support is limited (e.g. doesn't support emailing form
results, etc).

Does that make sense? Just want to make sure before I move to another
host... Also, since I intend to use FT for web publishing, should I opt for
Windows-based hosting?

It makes sense, because Yahoo told you they didn't support it.
Hosts can limit what they support in the extensions.

What is FT?

If by FT 2k3 drivers you mean FP extensions for 2k3, then Microsoft
do not offer them for Windows either. FP2002 extensions are the
latest, and the last.

Thanks.

With that in mind, should I bother migrating? From wht I've heard, it is a
specific problem with Yahoo, and almost all the other host that claim to
support FPSE work fine with ek3.

In my opinion it is worth while migrating from Yahoo, but before signing up
with another host make sure they have enabled all the features you wish to
use. My own host, for example, uses Windows servers, but does not provide
the FrontPage extensions email transport.
