Admin Programs and FPSE not compatible
|
|
| -=>Danny 2006-05-04, 1:14 am |
| I'm having the same problem as Dan (above^^^)
I installed the 2002 FPSE on a W2KAS machine, and as soon as I install the
newer server extensions I get; "The server administration programs and the
server extensions on the web
server are not compatible. The administration program is too old to use with
this server."
Your reply to the person who was having a similar problem was;
"Start->Administrative Tools->Microsoft SharePoint Administrator"
But I don't have Microsoft SharePoint Administrator on my W2K machine...
(I'm running Front Page 2002 SP3 on a W2KAS machine with IIS 5.0.)
Is there a MMC Snap-in update for IIS 5? What do I need to do to administer
the FPSE on a W2KAS machine with IIS 5.0??
Why doesn't the FPSE installation check to see if it can be administered
before it installs itself?? (rhetorical)
Thanks,

No, because Sharepoint Administrator isn't in my administrative tools. I
don't have 2003 server.
Can I just download Sharepoint from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsser...nt/default.mspx
and install it on a W2K server? or am I gonna run into the same kinda
problems I ran into when I installed the newer server extensions?

| The System requirements for Sharepoint are:
Server software
One of the following operating systems:
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition
Windows Server 2003, Web Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition
Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition
Windows Server 2003, Datacenter x64 Edition
But when you download the server extensions from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...fpse2002win.asp it says:
Intel x86;
Windows NT Workstation 4.0;
Windows NT Server 4.0;
Windows 2000 Professional;
Windows 2000 Server;
Windows 2000 Advanced Server;
Windows XP Professional Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0 or later
OK... So now I have the new server extensions installed on a W2Kmachine....
But I aparently can't use Sharepoint.... So, how do I administer the server
extensions??

| Can't administer the server extensions from IIS snap-in... Can't do it from
the fpmmc..... Can't create a new snap-in for the server extensions... Can't
install Sharepoint on a W2K server....
Command line administration works, but there's got to be a better way.
Anyone??

Start > Administrative Tools > Microsoft Sharepoint Administrator
This is the web based administration tool for FrontPage 2002
extensions.
There is no MMC snap in.

| Thanks Ron,
But because the server is Windows 2000, there is no SharePoint.
I do have XP pro but I don't wat to run it on this machine. I would upgrade
to Windows 3000 server, but because of problems like this, I'm considiring
using Apache on Unix in the future. I've been using NT servers since ver 3.5,
and I'm just just tired of it.

| We know there is no Sharepoint Installed. However, the FP 2002 server
extensions are referred to as "Microsoft Sharepoint Administrator".
And, they are web based.
Did you in fact look where Ron told you?

| Yeah Tom, I looked there.
I have resolved the issue and for the sake of others who may be having the
same issue I will post the steps I took to fix the issue.
First read: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=898922
Note: When the Front age 2002 Server Extensions are Installed, the old
server extensions are left on your machine - FPSE 2002 doesn't upgrade the
old server extensions, it installs new ones, and leaves the old
administration link in the IIS MMC. You will no longer be able to administer
the Front Page Server Extensions from the IIS MMC. You WILL, however be able
to administer the FP2002 server extensions from there. When I installed the
2002 server extensions on my W2K server, the administration directory wasn't
created, and I had to create it manually from within the IIS FP2002 MMC.
On a Windows 2000 Server there will be no reference anywhere to Sharepoint.
As such there will be no "Microsoft Sharepoint Administrator".

| Danny: I'm happy you finally got it resolved. Good job!
I'm a little confused when you say:
"You will no longer be able to administer the Front Page Server Extensions
from the IIS MMC. You WILL, however be able to administer the FP2002 server
extensions from there"
If you are no longer able, how can you now? Can you share with us what this
means?
Thanks!

Sure Tom...
Since the old server extensions are not removed when you install the new
ones, and there are still references to the old ones in the IIS MMC, if you
try to do anything to the old server extensions you will get the
incompatibility error message.
IMHO, when the new server extensions were installed, all references to the
old ones should have been removed in the IIS MMC. For instance: If I go to a
Web erver in the IIS MMC, and right click the properties for that Web, then
select "All Tasks" it still shows "Check Server Extensions" but you can no
longer "Check Server Extensions" because it is trying to check the OLD server
extensions. Of course, if you select "Check Server Extensions 2002" it will
work. But why are the old server extensions left in the MMC if they can no
longer be administered from there? ... Your guess is as good as mine... The
new extensions are supposed to be downwardly compatible, so why leave the old
ones on the server.. especially if they have to be command-line administered
because the IIS MMC won't let you administer them.. Maybe I'm just retarded
or something, but it seems to me that the MMC references to the old server
extensions should have been removed during the 2002 FPSE installation.

| FYI: There are cases where you can not upgrade a site that is running the FP2000 extension to the
FP2002 extensions, so under Windows 2000 server you can choose which version of the extensions you
want to run per site.

I guess my issue with this is that the Microsoft FPSE 2002 download page
says, "FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 are compatible with Microsoft
FrontPage 2002 and all previous versions of FrontPage" And now I'm
wondering: If someone decides that they do want to use the older server
extensions for a site, will they be able to administer them from the IIS MMC?
