No Option to "Remember my password"
|
|
| Jo, Lampwork Artist 2006-05-31, 1:16 pm |
| I have designed and am currently updating several sites which are located on
various servers. I use FrontPage 2003. When connecting to the host server to
publish sites, FrontPage gives me the option to "Remember my password" on all
sites I work on, except one. For this one site, I am always prompted for the
User Name and Password. There is no option to "Remember my password"
available.
The server admin of the offending site tells me this relates to a setting
for this site in FrontPage, although I can't find it. By the way, I have two
other sites that he also hosts, and am able to "Remember my password" in both
of those.
This isn't a debilitating problem, but it's very annoying. Does anyone know
how I can make FrontPage "remember my password" when connecting to the server
to publish?
I appreciate any advice provided!

| Passwords used by FP are "stored" using IE
In IE use Tools > Internet Options > Security
Click on 'Trusted' and on 'Custom Level'
Make sure the selection at the bottom is set to:
'Automatic logon with current username and password' and click OK
Click on 'Sites' and add your site URL in the 'Add this Web Site to the Zone', and OK, OK
- note: you may have to unselect the option: Require server verification (https)... to add your site

| This only works if you have the option to remember passwords in the first
place. In Jo's case, that option does not exist. I have seen this myself.
Since re-installing the OS on my PC cured the problem for me, it does not
appear to be a server problem - but the only other option (a setting in IE)
appears to be already set correctly since Jo can remember passwords for
other sites.

| Setting the Site in your Trusted sites and changing the authentication on and off from
'Automatic logon with current username and password'
to
'Prompt for user name and Password'
often clears that

| Stefan and Ronx,
Thank you both for your input and advice.
Stefan, I followed your suggestion, but unfortunately it made no difference
in my ability to "remember my password" when publishing that site. However, I
believe I now know why this is occurring. I also left the original message in
the "FrontPage - General" group and got a response indicating this is
definitely a server setting. I emailed this thread to the host server admin
for the offending site and received this response:
"Jo,
Unfortunately, the server software we use that provides us the control panel
does not let us customize permissions like that as it can cause problems with
the function of the software that is running along-side Windows. I have
tried to adjust permissions manually in the past and the control panel
software over-rides them nightly when it runs its security check. Sorry for
the inconvenience of requiring a password when attempting to log-in and
publish the site. I imagine they have it set that way to make things more
secure."
When I queried why this wasn't occurring with the other two sites he hosts
that I support, he responded:
"Jo,
Those other 2 sites are on a different non-Windows server, hence the
difference in behavior."
I guess it's something I'll just have to live with, but at least I know it's
nothing I can repair from my end. And the mystery is cleared up.
Thanks again to you both for your time and advice.
