BT2002 SP1 in a shared BTM environment
|

| Using BT2002 on two W2K servers. One is production; one is
development. Both are in the Server Administrator under "Microsoft
BizTalk Server 2002": one in the production group and one in the test
group. Due to the configuration quirks of BT, BOTH server groups have
to use the same InterchangeBTM database.
Now I have to apply SP1, and have been directed to do so ONLY on our
dev server for testing/qualification purposes. But SP1 alters the DB
schema, and I assume this includes the BTM database. How can I do
this without affecting the production installation?
Any suggestions/war stories/watchoutfergotchas appreciated.

I think that sounds rather risky considering they share the DB. I dont
think you can do that safely. You may wait for one of the MS guys to
confirm or deny, but I personally wouldnt take such a risk. I would first
seperate them completely before you do that. Or re-build on another machine
to test the SP and then roll it out in conjunction when you are confident.
Just an opinion...

After some cogitation, I wonder how you can set up a separate BizTalk
development environment in the same domain. By design, any group in
the "Biztalk Server 2002" entity in MMC shares the same DTM database.
How can I possibly test an SP1 application when every BT server in my
enterprise is affected by the update?

I dont thing the DTM is by design. When you install you have a the option
to put that DB wherever you want.... ideally (for your situation) locally.
You should get a list of available servers.
If I turn out to be wrong, install the server without a network connection:
it will be forced to install everything locally. Then you can re-connect to
the network or install and test the SP.
