A friend of mine wanted to know if he could migrate to .NET from his legacy
system in CA-OpenROAD. I suggested that he use BizTalk to integrate the .NET
application with the legacy OpenROAD application. Was i right ? Is this
feasible ?

Having not heard of OpenROAD before, I did a quick bit of googling...
created as a 4GL for Windows in the late 90's, OpenROAD was originally
coupled with Ingres and is most commonly used as a front-end development
language for Ingres database solutions.

Unfortunately, it is not clear if OpenROAD can receive messages, or if it
supports Web Services, or if you can create web applications in it. It is
not clear if applications running in the OpenROAD application server are
available under COM+ or via an open communications protocol.

It is possible that Biztalk would be useful in integrating with OpenROAD, if
he wants to keep the code in that platform. However, depending on the size
and complexity of the applications, he may want to consider starting over in
a language that other people actually use, like C# or (gasp) Java.

Without knowing a lot of specific details about his applications, and the
environment in which they run, it is not possible to tell if Biztalk is the
most optimum choice. However, it is unlikely to be "bad" advice, since
Biztalk is extremely flexible and, in the hands of an expert, can be used to
effectively integrate applications on a very wide variety of platforms.

Hope this helps,
