SQL Alias for BizTalk Databases

| Hi,
I'm working on a multi-phase BizTalk integration project. The first phase is
considered a proof of concept and will have relatively low transaction
volume. The customer would like to use a lower performance SQL server for
the first phase and migrate to a high performance SQL cluster for future
phases when required. We'd like to minimize effort for the migration
(unfortunately, using the SQL cluster now is not an option) and thought
using SQL alias for the BizTalk database server might be the answer. When
it comes time to migrate, we'll shutdown BizTalk, move the databases to the
SQL cluster, point the SQL alias at the cluster and start BizTalk again.
Are SQL aliases supported for the BizTalk database server? Will this
migration plan work?
Thanks,
Jason

| There is a whole section in the biztalk documentation about backing up and
restoring your biztalk databases that you can use for moving databases as
well.

| Yes, I am aware of the documentation and I have run through the process to
test disaster recovery. It is a failry long involved process and hence
prone to mistakes. If using a SQL alias is supported, I'd prefer to use the
approach I described in my ealier post. Can anyone confirm that using SQL
alias for the BizTalk database server is supported?

| I would say it isn't supported because it was not tested. However,
clusters are supported, in a sense the virtual name is sort of like an
alias. Are you thinking of doing an alias record in DNS or cliconfg.exe
alias on each machine?
