Is it possible to have 2 different BizTalk Server
instances running on one machine. If this is possible is
it done using different BizTalk groups.

Yes. It is possible to have multiple BizTalk Server Service Instances on a
single machine.
No, this version does not support one BizTalk Server belonging to multiple
BizTalk Server Groups.

The way this is accomplished is by creating multiple Hosts.
Add the same server [MACHINE] to the multiple hosts.
Map these hosts to the functionality you require.
E.g.
Map the FILE [Receive Handler] to ReceiveHost
Map the FILE [Send Handler] to TransmitHost
Enlist the Orchestration to the ProcessingHost

With the above cofiguration you will have 3 hosts.
One each dedicated for Receiving, Transmitting and Processing.
Each Instance [BTSNTSvc] will be dedicated to performing the functionality
it is designated.

If you have multiple servers JOIN the same BizTalk Group.
You can add those servers to the same Hosts, thereby scaling out and
balancing the load.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. Is it possible to have the instances
act as different BizTalk Servers, instead of a load
balancing situation?

I'm sorry I don't seem to understand the qustion.
What do you mean by "have the instances act as different BizTalk Servers"?

I will make an assumption and try to answer your question.
Yes you can add additional BizTalk Servers to the same BizTalk Group.
These servers do not have to perfrom the same role as the original BizTalk
Server.

E.g. You can create a new Host [SQLRxHost].
You can then add the new server as a Host Instance to the new Host
[SQLRxHost].
This server can then be dedicated to receiving input for the SQL adapter.
You can guaranty this by mapping the SQL Receive Handler to this newly
created Host.

The other server can continue to perfrom the roles it was initially
configured to perform.
If you do experience performance issues and wish to scale out you can
always overload the 2 servers.
By adding them to the other hosts, thereby balancng the load.

MRoze

Sorry for the extremely long delay in replying.

If the doc says "only one server can be in a group and to remove a server
before adding a server" the doc is wrong.
That is the purpose of the JOIN option while running ConfigFramework.exe.

To see the JOIN option on the second server, click on the drop-down arrow
and select it from the ListBox.

Thanks,
MRoze
