General question about permission(s) and Biztalk Server. As the
administrator, I am wondering if anyone knows of any good docs regarding
permissions and management of the server itself. Sounds like most of the
times, the actual biztalk developers are the managers, but in this case, IT
has to manage it, but nothing else, as long as the developer can publish to
it. So, from that side, any good Admin docs anyone know of?

Second, the server itself doesn't have to have Visual Studio installed in
order for the developer to publish to it, correct? Any special
permissions/settings a developer needs in order to publish to the server?
Where would I find that?

Thanks.

Kevin,

Start here:

BizTalk Server 2004: Security
(http://www.microsoft.com/biztalk/te...04/security.asp)
Examine security mechanisms and deployment methodologies that BizTalk Server
2004 uses to authenticate data, authorize access, and maintain data privacy
and integrity.

Visual Studio won't be of much use in deploying to the production server (in
isolation) because the assemblies still need to be deployed to the GAC on
the target machine. In addition, there is usually a host of other other
configuration issues to worry about (like deploying soap/http
infrastructure.)

You really need to create a formal installation process. You can look at
BTSInstaller (search in the documentation - though most people struggle with
this), or develop custom scripts (see the recent biztalk whitepaper on this
at:
http://www.gotdotnet.com/team/wsser...eDeployment.zip)

Or (my bias) look at the deployment framework here -

So, what I hear everyone saying is that it is not common to have a
production BizTalk 2004 server, where a developer can publish his
orchestration and SOAP application, in a friendly manner, unless we write
scripts or have a 3rd party app. Does that mean the real way to do it is to
have direct access to the server, so they can "copy" the files out there and
publish them to their respective locations?
