Hello I have some xml and I want to execute an update or insert depending on
an xml element.

What I guess I have to do is to create the source schema and promove the
element I will need to use in the orchestration.
but then what?

Create a variable in the orchestration?

Assuming you are using the sql adapter the difference is the format of the
xml going to the adapter.
after you've promoted the value (setting it as a distinguished field is
enough)
use a decide shape to check its value and construct the correct message and
send it to the send port.
