Author Configure Configure Configure - The Biztalk experience !

I know I should be enthused by the powerful capabilities of Biztalk
combined with SOA. But my own teams experience is that code developent
has simply been replaced by a complex array of different
configurations, tools, wizards and a multitude of abstractions (ports,
Receive Locations, Enlist, Bind etc) before getting a basic
orhestration up and running.

The SDK Samples are dominated by extensive Setup based 'Build and
configure solutions and BIZTALK artifacts, which don't really inform
the developer of the overall develop, ent and configuration process, and
often fall over due to due to security errors (401) despite running
everthing under Anonymous authentifications.

Sorry for being so frustrated, but surely there is a simpler way to get
an orchestrated SOA colution than this.

Jules,
i know the feeling. Going through all the posts and listening to the gurus
at conferences, i gather that this is the typical first experience with this
tool. All EAI tools have their own quirks and frustrations so we are not
alone and hey no one said integration was easy !!. However, there are some
good papers and tools out there that can help.

For instance the "Developing Integration Solutions with BizTalk" whitepaper
is a 100 page document that talks about the whole process and how to get
stuff developed. The authors also posted a simple deployment framework which
I was able to customize and use so now i can get new versions of my project
deployed in one batch file!!

Scott Colestock has a comprehensive Deployment Framework which is also meant
to address some of the deployment issues. I dont know much about NAnt so i
didnt use his framework.

If you look through the setup scripts for the samples and indeed the sample
code, there is quite a bit of stuff there.

Dont give up. After sometime you settle into a rhythm and things get easier.
(Having said that, i still tear my hair out often at "no matching
subscriptions found" messages ;-))

Im sure the story will get even better with BTS 2006's improvements in the
deployment experience and in due course we'll get more established best
practices and so on.

And of course, the community here is just awesome.

All the best
cheers
Benjy

Thanks for the sympathy and reference Benjy

I know its a powerful product, and there is so much it can do. Its just
the frustration of getting to release its pwoer that gets to me.

I am playing with Indigo right now, with some success, and its pretty
awsome technology. The combination of Indigo with Biztalk, or just a
simplified Orchestration Engine is going to awsome. 2006 is going to
be a big year for MS EAI products !

Best Regards

Jules
