BizTalk Server - EDI Subsystem undefined value

I have setup a port that checks a folder for EDI documents, the issue that I
am having is sometimes when the company sends the EDI file, they are putting
sections in the edi file with no valid value, instead they are putting spaces
(Example: from a X12-4010-856 file - REF*MI*
). Is there a way to remove these sections before BizTalk
tries to transfer it into XML? Thank you.
