I am a big BizTalk user and have been since 2000. Now I am in a Java/Oracle
shop and they are in desperate need of an integration server but lack the
experience and background to realize this.

Can we easily use BizTalk with an Oracle database so that SQL Server is not
required? If so are there some caveats that I should be aware of before I
recommend this? This of course would be my preference. If we can't easily
or effectively use BizTalk with Oracle is there another recommendation you
have for an integration server to be used in the Java/Oracle world? Thanks.

From what I understood from your question, you would like to know whether
Oracle can be used as BizTalk datastore for database like MessageBox, SSO,
Management etc.

Answer:
You won't be able to use Oracle as BizTalk message store. BizTalk server is
supported only with SQL Server 2000/2005 with relevant service packs.

If you requirement is just to access data from Oracle db, then you can use
BizTalk with Oracle adapter. If the Java apps are creating standard messages
then they can be integrated as well with appropriate adapters.

There are quite a few integrations servers on Java world. You can start your
investigation with

Tibco,
SeeBeyond
WebMethods,
IBM Websphere
