Author Install HELP. What goes where?

Hi, I'm sinking deeper & deeper into Installing BizTalk Server, the BTS2004
Installation Guide (Last updated: September 24, 2004). It lists a TON of
software pre-requisites. I'm installing a Development Server specifically
for BTS2004 with everything on one server for all the functions including
BAM, HAT, etc. Of course Visual Studio .NET 2003 is on MY own PC. The
Install Guide is not clear about WHERE to install everything, but I cannot
believe that everything on the list must go on the server. Can't some of the
parts stay on my own PC? Please help me understand this.

For development machines everything can go on one machine. In production
environments, it is very common to have Biztalk 2004 point to a SQL Server
cluster for failover reasons. If this is the case that server would need
SQL Server 2000 and Analysis Server with service packs and hotfixes. All
other pieces would still go on your Biztalk 2004 machine.

Thanks Jack. Let me refine the question some... 3 or 4 of us developers have
Visual Studio 2003 on our PCs and want to develop & test BTS2004. I am
setting up one PC as the Developers' Biztalk Server = development, not
production (that will come later on different servers). This Developer
BTS2004 machine is not that big or capable, so I'm trying to NOT load it up
with unnecessary parts, Visual Studio 2003 for example. The BTS2004 Install
Guide does not discriminate any prerequisites between the BTS2004 "engine"
itself (on the BTS server) and our several Developer PCs. I understand I CAN
install all prerequisites (and there are many listed) and BTS2004 on one
development box. But that's NOT what I'm trying to do. Can I get help on
what the BTS server engine needs VERSUS what the several developers need to
work with BTS from their PCs? -Robb

I see what you are saying now. This machine will still need all pre-reqs
from the install guide (and SQL and Analysis since I am assuming the dbs
will be local to this machine) with the exception of VS.NET 2003. You will
only need Windows Sharepoint Services if you are using BAS (and the machine
is Server 2003, this is the only OS it can go on). Office Web Components
are only needed if you are using HAT.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again for your reply. VS.NET is a big install, so saving that will be
a help.
