| Thank you for following up with your workaround. I've logged it for
documentation/kb.
I'm not sure what is happening with the entsso.exe and the regkeys for
Aventail...I'll see if the devs have any ideas.

Hi Paul,
I actually solved the problem yesterday.. I rebuildt the machine and
ended up with the exact same 0x800706BA during configframework, so I
decided to try regmon to see what entsso and configframework where doing
when the error occured. (I`ve done this earlier, but must have been
running without proper filtering and missed out on some details)
In order to get 2003 activated over the internet I had to install a
socks program in order to get the activation working, Aventail Connect,
since all internet access in this environment is going through a proxy.
This is a program that I used for that purpose only and forgot that it
was installed.
Back to regmon, I found that entsso.exe was reading Aventail Connects
registry entries, though Aventail Connect was not running. In these
registry settings, there was a exclusion list of processes, including
rpcss.exe. The standard documentation on Aventail Connect does not
explain the usage of this exclusion list, but entsso.exe found it
interesting to read from these settings and causing the 0x800706BA
message in ConfigFramework.. The sollution was to remove Aventail
Connect (or maybe just the rpcss.exe exclusion list entry) and the
configuration went just fine. I have been able to reproduce this
behaviour on my XP dev machine with BizTalk already configured. If I
tried to deploy/undeploy orchestration when Aventail Connect was
installed, I got a "The RPC server is unavailable" message..
The registry entries entsso tries to read is:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Aventail\Connect
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Aventail\Connect\Exclusion
List <-- this is where rpcss.exe
is one of the entries
So I guess this problem is from a very special case but the question
that remains unanswered is why entsso.exe reads the registry entries of
a socks/http-proxy program that is not running.. Perhaps this is
behaviour by design in some way, but if that`s the case maybe it should
be mentioned in the documentation somewhere?
I must say that I truly appreciate your efforts in this thread, it has
been very insightful for me in terms of how to troubleshoot MSDTC and
RPC issues - thanks a lot for that!
Now I`d better start doing som BAM work
Cheers,
Asbjørn
