Subject: Error while Configuring BizTalk 2004 against SQL Server Cluster
Date: Tuesday, February 08, 2005 8:03 PM

Hi,

I am trying to configure Biztalk 2004 with the BizTalk Databases on SQL
Server 2000 two node cluster. The cluster is up and i shut down one node of
the SQL Server.
I run the ConfigFramework.exe to configure BizTalk. After collecting all
configuration option the configuration starts. But it times out after a
while
giving the following error:
-----------------------------------
[6:37:20 PM Error BAMConfigWizExt] Deploying BAM infrastructure:
Failed to set up BAM database(s).
Failed to set up database SDC-VSQL-01 on server BAMArchive. Please make sure
the SQL server is functional and connected.
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the
operation or the server is not responding.
--------------------------------------

My observations:
1. After this configuration failure i checked the SQL Server. I find that
four of the BizTalk Server Databases are created. ( BAMPrimaryImport,
BizTalkDTADb,BizTalkMsgBoxDB and BizTalkMgmtDB). But rest of the databases
are not created.
2. Very peculiar Point about the error log: Error log reports "Failed to set
up database SDC-VSQL-01 on server BAMArchive." . The funny thing is my
virtual SQL server name is SDC-VSQL-01 and the database that should be
created is BAMArchive. The error message above says that my database is
SDC-VSQL-01 and server is BAMArchive. The configuration exe will never allow
us to provide a non-existing DB server. My inputs to the config exe are
correct. I was wondering whether the config exe is trying to access a
non-existing server.
3. I have setup the BizTalk server before on a single box with SQL and
BizTalk on the same machine. I didnot face any problems in configuration.
4. I have setup BizTalk on a two box configuration too..One for BizTalk and
one for SQL Server. I never faced this problem during that.
5. This is the first time i am trying to configure BizTalk against a
cluster. And this is the first time i am getting such a timeout error.
6. I have increased the timeout on the MSDTC to 600 seconds. Still no
success.
7. I have tried the hotfix mentioned in
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;843543 . Still no
success.

I am stumped. Anyone out there faced this problem? Let me know..

Cheers

It is not clear what the problem is from your description. I was wondering if you could attach the log file for the run. the file
should be in the form Config<TimeStamp>.log. That will probably contain the information to find out what exactly happened.

Sorry I don't take feature request for WinRes: it belongs to the .NET Framework SDK. I'm a consumer of WinRes, just like you...

I'm afraid that LocStudio (when you say LS, I assume you are using LocStudio) does not have the option, and WinRes does
not remember its size and location when it was shut down.
If you are trying to call it in your own application, you can always use ProcessWindowStyle.Maximized when you start the
process.

I had some trouble with clustering and I was also able to create part of the
databases. I had to do things like this:
- ConfigFramework /u to delete the bad setup
- Delete the database that were created if part of them were created (Should
be in one transaction, but still some databases were created)
- msdtc.exe -resetlog
msdtc.exe -uninstall
reboot
msdtc.exe -install
- Make sure to use manually created domains groups for the BizTalk groups.
- Try both the DTCTester and the DTCPing tool to see if you have good
contact with the DTC.
- Try this hotfix:
Windows Server 2003 COM+ 1.5 Rollup Package 3 (883955)

Also update BizTalk 2004 to SP1 before running ConfigFramwork so you have
the latest fixes there as well.

Best regards
Niklas Engfelt

Looks like a backwards error message(bug) because your config xml reflects
your statement that server and db were entered correctly.

Does eventvwr show anything on the BTS or SQL node? Also, try creating the
database manually(via isqlw.exe, EM, etc) to see if SQL throws any
error.(tsql: "create database BAMArchive" then "drop database BAMArchive"
to clean up).

You'll have to delete the databases that were created before running config
again, or you can use different db names.

I have attached the Config. The config file shows a long wait on a WMI
Call. After which the error i mentioned occurs.
