What should be done if the install ended with error messages?

It depends what the error is. The location of the log file is documented in
the readme.

If it's a correctable error (such as SQL being offline) then correct the
error and try to apply the service pack again.

If it's not a correctable error (such as the install being corrupt) then you
may need to restore from backup or reinstall. (Which obviously is the case
regardless of SP1).
