Author Install BizTalk 2002 service pack on Windows Server 2003

Hi

I quickly tried installing SP1 for BizTalk 2002 the other day on our
Windows 2003 Server cluster. It failed.

Only BizTalk 2002SP1 is supported at Microsoft, so it should be
installable, I'd think. Anyway, there are a couple of pittlfalls:

1. We do not have visio installed. BizTalk installs without problems
without visio - but how about the service pack? visio is mentioned
under "Required Software" in the SP1-documentation. But can it really
be so that BizTalk does not require visio and the service pack does?

2. It is in a active/passive cluster. This means that two seperate
BizTalk installations run on the same database, but one at a time. It
is not a BizTalk Server Group, where two BizTalk installations run
simultaneously. Is this an issue?

Upon installation, it goes all the way through, but then filas at the
end, stating that some step in the process couldn't be performed. If I
look in the 2000000GB installation log (roughly), I only get confused
- if I post it, will it help anybody in here narrow down the issue?

Thanks in advance

Hi Jan,

The reason for visio requirement is because SP1 need update the Visio
based orchestration designer.

Again I cannot say if your 'doubled Biztalk cluster' will hit problem
but the architecture is indeed a bit particular. If it's an important
production environment, I'd recommend you open a support incident to
our CSS(Customer Support Service) to troubleshoot your previous DTC
issue. Since you are MSDN subscriber, you should have 2 free incident
accounts.

Sure, you can post the service pack installation log here. I'll help
on reivew it and provide some ideas as possible.

Thanks.

Hi Jan,

Here are some recommended steps for installing BizTalk Server 2002
SP1 on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server Active/Passive Cluster:

1. Back up all Biztalk Databases
2. Move all Biztalk Clusters to Active Node (Node A)
3. Shut down cluster service on Inactive Node to make sure no hooks
are in the clustered database (Node B)
4. Install Biztalk Server 2002 SP1.
5. Say NO at end of Service Pack to auto-reboot at end of Service
Pack install
6. Start Cluster service on Node B
7. Move All Cluster Resources from Node A to Node B (Biztalk
Messaging Service will fail to start due to the database upgrades
while moving nodes).
8. Reboot Node A for changes to take effect.
9. Install Biztalk Server 2002 SP1 on Node B while Biztalk Messaging
service is stopped.
10. Once setup is complete, start Biztalk Messaging Service on Node
B.
11. Move cluster back to Node A and make sure all resources come
online. Move Back to Node B to verify failover/failback capability.

HTH
Thanks.

Hi

My appologies for the late answer, but I have been ill last week.

Anyway, I am aware that the SP requires Vision because it wants to
update it.

BUT, BizTalk 2002 itself can install WITHOUT visio - the parts that
require visio are just not installed. How come SP1 requires Visio,
then? It seems rather silly. It should, just as BizTalk 2002 itself,
be able to just ignore all installation steps that can not be
performed due to missing Visio.

What I am looking for is a way of knowing whether my installation
failed because I am missing visio or not. My customer does not want to
pay for a visio license if it is not necessary. And even if I install
Visio on the machines, that will not give me an XLANG database to
update...

I have placed the setup.log file from the failed installation of the
service pack at http://www.eliasen.dk/biztalk/Setup.log

From the log, looks like it failed at:

Since you stated XLANG Scheduler was not installed for sure, the
