July Product Documentation Update Fails
|
|
| Jeff Lynch 2004-07-25, 5:52 pm |
| I cannot get the July BizTalk Server 2004 product documentation update to
install on Windows XP. The download BTS2004(EN).exe begins and then pops up
a dialog box stating "Please insert the disk". Clicking OK does nothing.
I've tried this from several different directories with no luck.

| Jeff,
I have just downloaded the update and I have the same problem both on my
Windows XP Pro and my Windows Server 2003 box.

| Yep. Got it too. Have three BizTalk installations and they all say the same
thing. Untill we get it working, check out
http://www.msdn.microsoft.com/libra...portal_page.asp
for the online documentation. It has been updated with the July updates.
See the specific July updates here:

| The Doc Update does require that it have access to the original media used
to install BizTalk 2004. This error message pops up if you installed
BizTalk from a CD and it is no longer present in the drive so the Doc
Update can't find the install MSI.
Are you getting this error message with the original BizTalk install CD in
the drive?
Also, make sure the server has BizTalk itself (or atleast the documentation
install of BizTalk from the install MSI) installed on it before running
this update.
If you do have both of the above covered, let me know what the version is
of \Program Files\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004\BTNTSvc.exe.
Thanks!

| My original installation was done using my MSDN Universal DVD. It was in the
drive during the attempted update. I tried this three times and rebooted
between attempts. Would you like me to open a PSS case?
My BTNTSvc.exe is 3.0.4902.0

| Hello !
I tried with two CD's where I have BTS2004. The first is an ISO image
downloaded from the MS site,
the second is the MSDN Universal subscription one.
If I insert the wrong disc, I do not have the "Please insert the disk"
message. With this wrong disc, I have a message box with the following
message "Error 1706. No valid source could be found to product.....".
But with the installation disc, I do have the "Please insert the disk"
message.
My BTSNTSvc.exe version is 3.0.4902.0
I read a blog from Duncan Millard which have the same problem and
investigated a little more. He write
(http://geekswithblogs.net/dmillard/...07/26/8862.aspx) :
----
I've tried to install the new, updated help file for BizTalk 2004.
Unfortunately I get an error message, "Please insert the disk:" and have
either 'OK' or 'Cancel'. OK just re-prompts me, and Cancel rolls back the
install.
I tried extracting and running the MSP file on its own, and it looks like
it's trying to copy a new BTSNTSvc.exe and failing, which seems a little
strange... (The service was stopped anyway, so it shouldn't have caused too
much of a problem)
----
I hope it helps.
Best Regards
Yves Peneveyre

| I have just yesterday installed a server from the MSDN ISO (developer
edition downloaded from MSDN), and it still asks for a CD even though the CD
never left the drive.

| I am also getting the error. The version of BTSNTSvc.exe installed is
also 3.0.4902.0.
The same disc I used to install BTS is in the CDROM drive while
attempting to load the update. It is a copy of the downloaded MSDN
version.
Thanks much,

| I have the same exactly problems at $25000 Enterprice
edition of BT2004 Server (Version of BTSNTSvc.exe
3.0.4902.0). I tried to insert the original media CD and
pointed to .msi file on it --- with NO RESULTS!!!!!!
Microsoft products used to have the possibility to open
trouble-cases free of charge(depens of the version) , but
not BT2004. The chippest one is e-mail support for $99.

| Why does it need access to the original media? Why does it need to shut down and restart a bunch of services?
Is it doing more than updating the documentation?

| Hello,
We are looking into this issue.
I would like you to please verify the following:
Go to the below reg key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Inst
aller\Products\79404B104ADDBA247B7C3
4F226033AE9\SourceList
You will see LastUsedSource which contains an entry like
n;1;c:\biztalkinstallfolder\Msi\
Also PackageName that has the msi file name.
If the path and filename are not correct, please modify the path and
filename to match the path and filename to wherever your current Biztalk
MSI is located on the CD.
Reboot the server and then try doing the doc update install and let me know
if that resolves the issue or if you get different behavior.
Thanks!

| Thanks for the update.
We're still looking into this issue, but in the meantime, copy the files
from the CD onto the local drive.
Run the doc update without the CD in the drive and you should be prompted
for the MSI location. Point to the local MSI when prompted.
This has resolved the issue for some users.
Let me know if it resolves it for you.

But wondering ... what is it updating? If its just documentationm, why does
it need to restart all those services?

| Good to hear that the workaround has allowed you to install the Doc Update
despite the issues.
We will be rereleasing the Doc Update so that the installer no longer
restarts any services and the "Please insert the disk" issue is no longer
there. There will be no changes to the doc content so you will not need to
reapply the rereleased Doc Update if you have succesfully installed the
current one.
I will post once we have rereleased it.
Thanks!

| Hello !
I think there is a side-effect to this way of installing the doc
update......
In VS.NET, when you press F1, you have no help and a message saying : "No
links are available for the current selection".
All machines (3) where the update was installed have the same behavior.
