BizTalk Server Framework - messaging manager error

I have a problem with the Messaging manager where it only works when
the "Biztalk server to connect to" is defined as localhost as opposed
to the actual server name. I am running Biztalk 2002 and I am able to
view both http://localhost/messagingmanager and
http://localservername/messagingmanager without any errors through the
browser, yet I still receive the error "The response received from
server was not valid." when I have the connection defined with the
local servername

Does anyone have any more info as to why this fails with the
servername?
