I've tried using commands in the 'Before' put location like 'cd dirname' but
the ftp log says "unknown command". The dirname is there and works fine in
manual ftp mode. Any samples on how this should be coded? no samples in the
SDK or documentation.

You have to use "raw" ftp commands. See http://weblogs.asp.net/gzunino/arch.../10/153165.aspx
