Author Using ID/IDREF in maps

I have a schema which extensively uses ID/IDREF for cross-referencing within
an XML instance doc. The destination schema requires some of this
cross-referencing to be "dereferenced". I have looked everywhere on the best
approach for dereferencing IDREF's in the BT mapper (for 2004/6) and the best
I have found is to create an XSLT script functoid; this is obviously not
ideal. So two questions:
1) how can I dereference IDREFs in a BT2004/6 map
2) Is there a better way of implementing/encoding cross-references; maybe a
"typed" way (ie. using IDREF there's no mechanism for explicitly stating the
type of element an IDREF attribute points to), that the BT mapper can
understand and present a drag/drop UI for accessing the referenced element ?
