I am trying to use BTS2004 to integrate a windows based application with one
on an AS400 (iSeries) environment.
Our initial strategy was to expose AS400 data through windows shared folders
hosted by the AS400 box which could be picked up by a File Adapter based
receive location.

However this does not appear to work.
It complains of an inability to monitor the location if we use a UNC type
location for the adapter and of permissions problems if we map the drive to a
local drive letter on the BizTalk server.

Following some investigation I found the following historical explanation
from 2 years ago:

'We do not provide any connectivity to AS400 out-of-box with BTS. If what
you are trying to do is setup file receive functions for an AS400, I can
verify that you WILL run into problems. We only support file receive
functions on NTFS shares. Our RFs use NT File Change Notifications and a
lot of third-party file systems do not fully implement this. '

My questions are:

Is this still true, even for BTS2004?
Are the errors above the way this would be manifested by BTS2004?

And since I do not have the budget for third party adapters, does anyone
have any suggestions for alternative solutions other than
(a) Using the FTP adapter to contact the AS400
(b) Setting up scripts to copy/cut the data from the AS400 to a windows
hosted file location

You could write your own file adapter that uses polling instead of NT File
Change Notifications.

How about FTP on the AS400?

Hi Harry, I was hoping to raid you knowledge base and ask for any info
regarding the AS44 that you provide. If you could give me the basicss..the
origins whereit;s at and where it is headed.my personal email is
smn35@yahoo.com. also the technologgy of AS400.

I would owe you a big one....thanks for your time....

Can't you use HIS to do this?

Hello Harry,

I note your log entry is a couple of years old, but I find myself in a
postion similar to yours.
My company is in transition from AS/400 (iSeries) to MS Navision and we need
a way to keep our databases on the iSeries synchronised with Navision. We are
planning on using Biztalk Server 2006 to do the messaging and
transformations, etc but can't find a way to send/receive to the AS/400.

Did you find a way to make it work for you?
If so, would you be willing to pass on any information to me?

Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.

Many thanks,
Leonard.

I don't have much experience in this particular topic, but since you're
planning on using BTS06, there are at least a few options that might be
available to you:

- Use MQSeries with the MQSeries adapter included in biztalk
- Use one of the features that are brought on board to BTS06 with the
Enterprise Adapters package (previously part only of Host Integration Server
2004):

Host Applications
IBM, mainframe zSeries (CICS and IMS) and/or midrange iSeries (RPG)

IBM DB2
Database adapter for IBM DB2 on remote host computing platforms, IBM
mainframe zSeries, midrange iSeries, and/or Universal Database on open
platforms

Host Files
Data adapter for host file systems on IBM mainframe zSeries VSAM datasets
and midrange iSeries physical files
(see http://www.microsoft.com/biztalk/howtobuy/default.mspx)

And of course, you can still probably combine HIS and BTS if you need more
options. Does any of this sound like a useful possibility?

Tomas,

many thanks for your prompt and informative response to my enquiry.

My colleagues and I will follow up on what you have given us and I will let
you know how we get on.

Thanks again,
Leonard.

I looked into DB2 and Host files adapters for BTS06 and was thinking to
review them as an option, but I did not think they were shipped with Biztalk
06.
Are they still in Beta?
IF so, what is expected RTM date?
thanks
Julia

I think they are still in beta, but I believe there's an open beta available
in microsoft connect. There also seems to be a TAP program for them (though
it's probably a little late to join). Here's some more info:
