I'm constructing a new message based on an old one. There is a boolean in the
message that I want to set TRUE.

Every xpath I've tried results in "The expression passed to this method
should result in a NodeSet".

Any ideas?

Hello.

As long as the value exists in the original message, you could use a
Distinguished field to set the value. That way, you don’t have to use messy
xPath.
