I have 2 Windows 2003 servers with App Center SP2 installed as a General/Web
cluster using NLB. I am going to be moving our intranet sites to this new
web cluster. A new intranet site that this cluster will host requires the
installation of COM+ applications. I know I can replicate these new COM+
apps but is it possible to load balance access. I don't have the resources
to create a separate COM+ application cluster.

What is the best method for setting up this new site?

Thank you

If you do not have the resources to create a separate cluster for the COM+
applications, then you cannot leverage COM+ Component Load Balancing (CLB),
so you can just run the COM+ applications on the web servers themselves.

Depending on the amount of load and the overhead of the COM+ applications,
this may be appropriate.

Thank you, in a two node NLB will one of the servers end up taking all of
the COM+ application. Will it do any good to replicate the COM+ app to both
servers?
Thank you

Well, NLB is supposed to make sure that the load is somewhat evenly
distributed among the machines in the cluster, so the COM+ calls should be
occurring, in the long run, about as much on each of the two machines.

You do want to have the COM+ applications on both servers for this method
to work.

One thing you could do is to install COM+ proxies on the web servers, and
the proxies point to a separate server which would just run the COM+
applications. But this is not a COM+ load balancing method and is not a
replacement to CLB.

So, you're better off installing the COM+ applications on both web servers,
making sure you have single affinity set up in NLB, and then making sure
your users are not reporting problems maintaining sessions with the servers.
