JRE- what is the use of JRE on file server..

What is the use of JRE on file server (Windows 2000 server)? why do we need
it? we don't have any applications on that server, we just installed printers
, and the current versionis JRE 1.4.2_03; please let me know the latest
version which works with Windows 2000 server.
