How exactly does ACT work?

I can't find much in the help files.

It looks like ACT connects to you web server using varying client
connection speed e.g. 56K etc. This is one featuer you don't seem to
be able to change.

Also, as soon as you click Run Test - does that send out all of the
requests immediately does it gradually increase this?
