Microphone will not record voice

Could someone please tell me how to make my microphone work? I have tried
updating the drivers, ect. I still can't make it work. I can play music and
video and the sound comes out of the speakers okay but the microphone does
not work. It is a new microphone and it worked on a Windows XP pro system,
but I am running Windows XP home.

Help me please
